MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team plays in its final tournament of the regular season this weekend at the Git R Done Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb.
The two-day event will take place at Firethorn Golf Course, which is playing as a par-71 at 7,040 yards. Saturday will consist of 36 holes, while the final 18 will take place Sunday. A 9 a.m. shotgun start is scheduled for both days.
Minnesota is one of nine teams in a field that includes fellow Big Ten teams Nebraska and Michigan State, as well as Eastern Michigan, Kansas City, Kansas State, Louisiana Monroe, Oral Roberts and Wyoming.
Representing Minnesota at the tournament this weekend will be seniors Angus Flanagan and Thomas Longbella, junior Lincoln Johnson, sophomore Connor Glynn and freshman Ben Warian. Junior Harry Plowman-Ollington will also be in action as an individual at the event.
Five of the Gophers' top six scorers so far this season will be in competition, highlighted by Flanagan, the reigning Big Ten Golfer of the Week who took medalist honors at last weekend's Boilermaker Invitational. Flanagan's 207 was five shots better than any other 54-hole score this year, while his finish of 9-under was seven shots better than any other Minnesota finish. Flanagan had 13 birdies over the weekend, the third time he had reached that number this season.
In four stroke play tournaments this spring, Flanagan leads the team this spring in scoring average (72.08), birdies (44), percentage of scores counted (1.000), rounds under par (6) and tournaments leading the team (3).
Longbella ranks second with a scoring average of 74.89. He is coming off a tie for 33rd last weekend, which was his best finish of the season. He also recorded season bests for low round (70), round to par (-2), 54-hole score (221) and tournament score to par (+5).
Like Longbella, Warian is also coming off his best performance of the season. Warian, who ranks third on the team with a 75.00 scoring average, tied for ninth at the Boilermaker Invitational with a career-low 214 (70-74-70).
Johnson is averaging 75.08 strokes per round this year to rank fourth on the team, though it was just two tournaments ago that he had a career-best finish of a tie for 7th at the Hoosier Collegiate Invitational. He is the only Gopher to compete in all five tournaments this spring.
Glynn, who competed in the first three tournaments of the spring, is back in action this weekend after not competing at the Boilermaker Invitational. He ranks sixth on the team with his 76.56 scoring average.
Plowman-Ollington will be making his 2021 debut as he last competed at the Tavistock Collegiate in October of 2019. He competed in three tournaments in the fall of 2019, with two of those coming as individual. He had the best finish of his career when he tied for third as an individual at the Pleasant View Invitational.
As a team, Minnesota tied for third at the Boilermaker Invitational with a 5-under 859 (281-292-286). It was the best team finish and score to par for the Golden Gophers since winning the 2019 Macdonald Cup at 10-under.
