MINNEAPOLIS – A stellar Sunday in Lincoln, Neb., saw the Minnesota men's golf team share the team title and senior Angus Flanagan take home medalist honors at the Git R Done Husker Invitational.
As a team, Minnesota posted a 5-under 279 on Sunday, its lowest team round of the season, to equal Kansas State for the team title with an even-par 852 (290-283-279). It's the Gophers' first tournament victory since winning the Macdonald Cup in Sept. of 2019.
Flanagan, meanwhile, shot a 5-under 66 Sunday to win back-to-back medalist honors after also winning last week at the Boilermaker Invitational. He becomes the first Gopher to win consecutive tournaments since Jose Mendez won the Rutherford Intercollegiate and then the Big Ten Championship in the spring of 2014.
The score of 66 for Flanagan was the lowest by a Gopher this season and one shot off his career-low of 65, done twice previously. His 54-hole score of 6-under 207 (70-71-66) secured him a one-shot victory over Kansas State's Tim Tillmanns and Michigan State's Troy Taylor II.
Flanagan's day could not have started much better as he was 5-under through the front nine. After a par on No. 1, he birdied holes 2-4 and then followed with a par and another birdie on No. 6. Back-to-back pars were followed by a fifth birdie on No. 9 for a 31 on the front. He made it to 6-under thanks to a sixth birdie on No. 11 before ending his day with six pars in a row and a bogey on No. 18.
Junior Lincoln Johnson earned his second top-10 finish of the season as he took ninth with a +2, 215 (76-69-70). It's the second time in Johnson's career that he's posted consecutive rounds under par, also doing so as a sophomore at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate. He was even through 10 holes as birdies on holes 3 and 7 cancelled out a double bogey at No. 4. He then birdied No. 11 before finishing with seven straight pars.
Senior Thomas Longbella and freshman Ben Warian each tied for 13th with a 4-over, 217.
The finish and the 54-hole score were both the best of the season for Longbella as he posted an even-par 71 Sunday. He birdied his opening hole, No. 3, before doubling on No. 5 but getting back to even on No. 7. He posted a bogey on No. 9 but came back with consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11. He had pars on his final nine holes, save for a bogey on No. 1.
For Warian, he recorded a 1-over 72 Sunday. He posted pars on 13 of his first 14 holes, with the only other score being a bogey on No. 6. He then birdied No. 16 to get to even, only to see a bogey on No. 17 drop him back into the black.
Sophomore Connor Glynn was one shot behind Longbella and Warian as he had season bests for finish (20th), score to par (+6) and 54-hole score (219). Glynn shot a 2-over 73 Sunday, highlighted by four birdies. He started the day 6-over through nine holes, but bounced back with his four birdies coming over the final eight holes, including two in a row at holes 14 and 15.
Junior Harry Plowman-Ollington competed at the event as an individual and was 57th in his 2021 debut. He was 1-under on the first nine holes on the course Sunday, but +15 on the final nine. That left him at +22 for the tournament with a 235 (74-76-85).
Minnesota is off next week before gearing up for the Big Ten Championships at Crooked Stick Golf Course in Carmel, Ind., April 30 through May 2.
