Gophers Visit Crooked Stick for Big Ten Championships

4/29/2021 12:47:00 PM | Men's Golf

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan is set to defend his individual title this weekend as he and the rest of the Golden Gophers' contingent travels to Carmel, Ind., for the 2021 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships.

The three-day event will take place at the famed Crooked Stick Golf Club, which is playing as a par-72 at 7,325 yards. The course has previously hosted major tournaments including the 1991 PGA Championship, 1993 U.S. Women's Open, 2005 Solheim Cup and the 2012 and 2016 BMW Championship. The golfers this weekend will play 18 holes each day. Friday's opening round will see the Gophers tee off at 9:25 a.m. CT.

Flanagan is one of eight Gophers in program history to have won medalist honors, claiming a share of the 2019 title at Philadelphia Cricket Club's Wissahickon Course, and he's looking to join Les Bolstad (1929 and 1927) as the only Gophers to win the event twice in their careers. The other individual winners in program history are Jose Mendez (2014), Matt Anderson (2003), John Harris (1974), Jim Bergeson (1972), Dave Haberle (1971), Bill Brask (1968) and James Teale (1943).

Minnesota has won the Big Ten team title eight times in its history: 2014, 2007, 2003, 2002, 1972, 1963, 1938 and 1929. Their most recent finish of ninth place at the 2019 Big Tens was the Gophers' best since tying for third in 2015. There was no championship event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

As a team, Minnesota is coming off a share of the title at the Git R Done Husker Invitational. The Gophers posted a 5-under 279 in the final round, its lowest team round of the season. It was the program's first tournament victory since winning the Macdonald Cup in Sept. of 2019.

Representing Minnesota this weekend will be the team's top six scorers this year in Flanagan and fellow senior Thomas Longbella, junior Lincoln Johnson, sophomore Connor Glynn and freshman Ben Warian.

Flanagan is playing his best golf of the season entering Big Tens, winning consecutive medalist honors at the Boilermaker Invitational and the Git R Done Husker Invitational and claiming back-to-back Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors. He's the first Gopher to win consecutive tournaments since Jose Mendez won the Rutherford Intercollegiate and then the Big Ten Championship in the spring of 2014.

In five stroke play tournaments this spring, Flanagan leads the team in scoring average (71.47), birdies (56), percentage of scores counted (1.000), rounds under par (8) and tournaments leading the team (4). He has the three lowest rounds on the team this year by stroke and the three lowest 54-hole scores by stroke. The Woking, England, native also owns the team's top four rounds to par and the top two 54-hole scores to par.

Longbella ranks second with a scoring average of 74.25. He is coming off a season-best finish of a tie for 13th at the Git R Done Husker Invitational last time out. He also recorded season bests for low round 54-hole score (217) and tournament score to par (+4). This weekend will be the third time Longbella has competed at the Big Ten Championships, tying for 48th in 2019 and 29th in 2017.

Like Longbella, Warian also tied for 13th at the Gophers' last even. Warian ranks third on the team with a 74.33 scoring average and two rounds under par. He has finished 21st or better in each of his last three tournaments, including a career-best tie for ninth at the Boilermaker Invitational.

Johnson is averaging 74.40 strokes per round this year to rank fourth on the team, though he is second on the squad with 44 birdies and three rounds under par this spring. Johnson, who finished 55th as a freshman at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, has two top-10 finishes this year, including a ninth-place effort at the Git R Done Husker Invitational.

Glynn has competed in four stroke play tournaments of the spring and is fifth on Minnesota's roster with a 75.67 scoring average. He did have his finish of the season two weekends ago, taking 20th in Lincoln, Neb. He also had season bests for 54-hole score (219) and tournament score to par (+6).
