MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team battled the elements in Friday's opening round of the 2021 Big Ten Men's Golf Championships at Crooked Stick Golf Club, finishing 11th through 18 holes.
Facing wind gusts between 20-25 miles per hour, the Golden Gophers shot a 26-over-par 314. Showcasing the difficult playing conditions, 18-hole leaders Illinois and Iowa both were 12-over at 300 and only two other schools were better than +20 on the day. In addition, individual leader John Driscoll of Northwestern was the only one in the 70-player field to finish Friday in the red as he shot a 1-under 71.
Looking to defend his medalist performance at the 2019 Big Ten Championships, Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan finds himself in 10th place after the opening round as he recorded a 3-over 75. Starting his day on the back nine, Flanagan bogeyed No. 10 but immediately got the stroke back with a birdie on No. 11. He finished 2-over on his first nine and was 4-over through 12 holes, but he steadied himself with five consecutive pars before a birdie on No. 9 to end his day.
Sophomore Connor Glynn, who was making his Big Ten Championships debut, was 4-over through seven holes before recording his first birdie of the day on No. 17. He finished 4-over through his first nine though with a bogey on No. 18. He notched his second birdie on No. 3 but followed with a double bogey on the next hole. To close out his round, he bogeyed No. 7 but finished with a four on the par-5 9th to finish the day with a 5-over 77, tying for 21st.
Like Glynn, freshman Ben Warian was also competing in his first Big Ten Championships, and Warian posted an 8-over 80 to earn a tie for 43rd. He finished his first nine holes at +6 and got up to +8 through 13 holes, but he was even over his final five holes as he picked up birdies on the fifth and ninth holes to cancel out a double on No. 8.
Junior Lincoln Johnson was two shots back of Warian, tallying a 10-over 82 to tie for 55th. He was four-over through 11, but was done in by a triple bogey on No. 5.
Fifth-year senior Thomas Longbella matched Glynn for the team lead with three birdies in the opening round, but he finished tied for 60th with an 11-over 83. He was 8-over through nine holes and 11-over through 12 holes played, but he finished the day even-par over his final six holes, including birdies on holes No. 6 and No. 9.
Minnesota will be back on the course Saturday morning for round two of the Big Ten Championships. Longbella will start the Gophers' day on the back nine at 8:40 a.m. CT with Johnson, Warian, Glynn and Flanagan to follow in nine-minute increments.
