Gophers Fall in Game Four to Nebraska, 6-4

4/18/2021 2:57:00 PM | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS - No. 24/23 Minnesota fell in the final game of their four-game series versus the Nebraska Cornhuskers Sunday, 6-4.

The loss snapped the Gophers' Big Ten Conference-leading eight game winning streak, though they still have recorded 10 wins over their past 12 competitions. Sunday's matchup also marked the Huskers first win over the Gophers since 2015, snapping the 14-straight game win streak that Minnesota had accumulated over that time.

Getting the start for the Maroon & Gold was junior Autumn Pease, who recorded her first career no-hitter earlier in the weekend. After only three baserunners for either team in the first two innings, Nebraska plated the first run of the day on a sac fly to center. Minnesota quickly responded in the bottom of the third, however, as Natalie DenHartog sent a solo shot over the left field wall to record her 11th homer of the season.

The Huskers opened their biggest lead of the day at 4-1 in the top of the fourth before Sara Kinch sent a solo shot over the left field wall to close the gap slightly for Minnesota.

Minnesota completely closed the gap in the fifth. Makenna Partain brought home Mackenzie Denson with a single to right-center early in the inning before Partain scored herself to tie it up when Nebraska walked Sydney Strelow with two outs and the bases loaded.

A two-run shot to left field for the Huskers late in the sixth proved to be the difference.

Amber Fiser, who entered in the fourth inning, took home the loss for the Maroon & Gold to drop to 10-5 on the season, while Nebraska's Courtney Wallace got the win.

The Gophers will next see the field Friday, April 23 when they kick off a four-game home series with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
