Fiser, Evans Lead Minnesota to 13th Straight Win Against Iowa
4/23/2021 7:58:00 PM | Softball
Amber Fiser struck out six and pitched a complete game two-hit shutout as Minnesota beat Iowa 3-0 on Friday night at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.
Freshman Chloe Evans broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run home run to center field to score Katelyn Kemmetmueller, who reached base on a single to start the inning. It was the second home run of the season for Evans and first since she hit a pinch hit three-run homer in a 10-4 win at Northwestern on April 11.
Back home on Friday, Megan Dray followed Evans' blast with a walk and was replaced by pinch runner MacKenzie Denson. Emily Hansen then pinch hit for Sydney Strelow and made it 3-0 when she plated Denson with a double to center field.
Fiser, who improved to 11-6, was in command the entire game. The senior threw 105 pitches and allowed only two Hawkeye doubles – one in the fourth and one in the fifth – in the series-opening win.
Minnesota improved to 23-6 (7-2 at home) on the season and is 9-1 in its last 10 games. Iowa fell to 15-14 on the season.
The Gophers have now won 13 straight games against the Hawkeyes and are 21-1 in their last 22 games against their border rival.
Minnesota plays a doubleheader against Iowa on Saturday before closing out the four-game series with a single game on Sunday.
