Gophers Earn 3-0 Win Over Iowa

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program defeated Iowa, 3-0, today at Maturi Pavilion. The Golden Gophers won by set scores of 25-22, 25-11, 25-19, en route to their 14th win of the season. Iowa dropped to 4-15 this year.
Minnesota had four student-athletes earn double-digit kills. Stephanie Samedy held a match-best 13 kills, followed by Taylor Landfair with 12, Adanna Rollins with 11 and Regan Pittman with 10. Landfair hit .524, while Rollins hit .500. Overall the Gophers hit a stifling .448 as a team and held the Hawkeyes to .223. Melani Shaffmaster had 35 assists and a team-best nine digs. Rachel Kilkelly added eight digs and an ace.
For the match, Minnesota had 52 kills, five aces, 35 digs and seven blocks. Iowa added 35 kills, four aces, six blocks and 31 digs.
Minnesota plays Iowa again tomorrow at 3 p.m. The match will be televised on ESPNU.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota earned a 25-22 set win over Iowa. The Gophers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set. Shaffmaster added a kill for an 11-5 lead, while Rollins pushed the lead to double-digits off a kill for the 18-8 point. With Minnesota holding a 22-16 lead, Iowa went on a 6-2 run to cut the Gopher lead to 24-22 as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers were able to close out the set on a Rollins kill for the 25-22 win.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .556 in the second set to earn a 25-11 win. Minnesota jumped out to a 13-6 lead as Iowa called a timeout. However, the Gophers went on a 6-2 run after the timeout to cushion the lead. Rollins pushed the lead to 10 when she held a solo block at 18-8. Landfair added a kill for the 22-10 point, while a Pittman ace put the Gophers within two of the set win. Landfair and Samedy added back-to-back kills for the 2-0 match lead.
Set 3: Minnesota erased an early set deficit to win the third set, 25-19. Iowa jumped out to a 7-3 lead off a kill. The Gophers however, were able to tie the set at 10-10 off a 7-3 run of their own. After tying again at 11-11, Minnesota took the lead for good at 12-11 for the win. Ellie Husemann had a kill at the 13-11 point and followed with a block at 15-12. Rollins put the Gopher lead to 17-13, while a Samedy kill gave the Gophers their 20th point of the set. Minnesota had a block from Shaffmaster and Pittman at the 23-18 mark, while Landfair added the match's final blow at 25-19 and her 12th kill of the night.
