Bertrand Homers Twice as Gophers Drop Doubleheader

Minnesota and Indiana close out the weekend series on Sunday, April 25 with the finale set for 10:00 a.m. CT on BTN Plus.
The Gophers (4-22) fell in both games of a Friday doubleheader with the Hoosiers (17-8), dropping the opening contest 9-3 before falling 7-1 in the day's finale.
Game One | Indiana 9, Minnesota 3
Home runs from Easton Bertrand and Ronald Sweeny weren't enough for Minnesota as the Gophers opened the weekend with a 9-3 loss to Indiana on Friday afternoon. Bertrand led the Maroon & Gold with three hits in the first game of a Friday doubleheader while Andrew Wilhite added three walks.
Junior J.P. Massey (0-4) got the ball to start for Minnesota and took the loss while throwing 3.2 innings with six strikeouts. Patrick Fredrickson and Bennett Theisen also saw action on the mound for the Maroon & Gold.
Trailing 3-0, the Gophers first put two runs on the board in the fourth inning when Sweeny left the yard with Wilhite aboard.
The Hoosiers expanded their lead to 8-2 before the Gophers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Minnesota picked up a run on Bertrand's two-out solo home run off of junior Tommy Sommer, which tightened the Hoosiers lead to 8-3. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Indiana added one run to their tally on the way to a 9-3 final.
Game Two | Indiana 7, Minnesota 1
Indiana had Minnesota's number in the afternoon follow-up as well, building a 6-0 lead before Bertrand's solo home run in the sixth inning off Nathan Stahl. The Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Indiana added one run to their tally on the way to a 7-1 final.
Sophomore Jack Liffrig (1-3) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota, striking out four in six innings of work. Noah DeLuga pitched the final two innings for the Maroon & Gold.
Bertrand led the way offensively for the Golden Gophers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Junior Andrew Wilhite compiled a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Sophomore Noah Berghammer also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Minnesota with a double and a walk.
