Minnesota Advances to NCAA Nationals

The No. 8 University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team is headed to the NCAA National competition after placing second in the Athens Regional Championship on Saturday evening, as the top-two teams from each Regional qualify. The Gophers posted a 197.425 and were second only to Florida who had a team score of 197.700. 

Notable
The Gophers will head to the NCAA Nationals for the first time since 2016 and will face off against Florida, Michigan and California in the first semifinal. 

Freshman Mya Hooten had a huge performance for the Maroon and Gold, posting a 9.950 on floor and vault. The Woodbury, Minn. native also recorded a 9.800 on bars. 

All four of Lexy Ramler's routines earned a 9.900 or above from the judges.  Ramler had a 9.950 on beam, 9.925 on bars and a 9.900 on both vault and floor.

"We are so proud of the way the team fought until the very end," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "It is such an incredible night, and we are so excited for our team and this tremendous accomplishment."

"What a rush! We fought all the way to the end and put our hearts all on the floor," Ramler said. "We couldn't do it without each one of us. When we found out we advanced, it was pure tears of joy from all of our hard work from this unpredictable year. This is such a special memory in my heart. We are going to Nationals!"

All-Around
Ramler placed second in the all-around competition with a 39.675. She was second to Lynnzee Brown of Denver who recorded a 39.750. Ramler's single event highs were a 9.950 on beam and 9.925 on bars. 

Ona Loper had a 38.700 all-around score, highlighted by a 9.900 on vault and 9.825 on bars. 

Event Breakdown
Bars
Team bars improved on their performance yesterday to post a 49.325, led by Ramler who earned a 9.925.  Tiarre Sales added a strong 9.875, while the duo of Halle Remlinger and Hannah Willmarth snagged 9.850s from the judges. Loper scored a 9.825 for her routine. 

Beam
The beam queens impressed the crowd tonight with a huge score of 49.500. Ramler scored a 9.950 to tie for first and was followed by Sales and Mary Korlin-Downs who contributed a pair of 9.925s. Both Lexi Montgomery and Emily Koch hit the 9.850 mark. 

Floor
Minnesota's floor squad combined for a team event score of 49.150. Hooten led the Gophers with her 9.950-earning routine. Mallory LeNeave notched a career-high 9.925 and Ramler followed with a 9.900. Abbie Nylin scored a 9.825 and Koch a 9.550 to round out the scoring. 

Vault
The Gophers battled back on vault and had an outstanding 49.450 to clinch the Nationals berth. Hooten recorded the highest score of any Minnesota gymnast with a 9.950. Loper and Ramler had a pair of 9.900s. Both Gianna Gerdes and Kate Grotenhuis recorded career-high 9.850s for the Maroon and Gold.

Minnesota advances to the NCAA National Championship in Fort Worth, Texas on April 16-17. The semifinal is set for Friday, April 16 at 12:00 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The Championship Final will be live on Saturday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m. on ABC.
