MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota baseball team dropped game one of their three-game series against Iowa on Friday night by a score of 7-1.
Minnesota starting pitcher Sam Ireland was brilliant, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing his first hit in the frame. Ireland finished with six innings pitched, allowing zero earned runs on just three hits and three walks while striking out seven.
Ireland and Iowa starter Trenton Wallace dueled through the first four innings, as both pitchers held the opposition scoreless. Despite collecting seven hits against Wallace through the first five innings, the Gophers were unable to push a run across home plate.
The Hawkeyes, however, broke through in the fifth, rallying for six unearned runs in the inning on just two hits. The first two runs came home on a Matthew Sosa RBI groundout and Brendan Sher sacrifice fly, before freshman Peyton Williams launched a grand slam to right field to make it a 6-0 game.
Despite the six unearned runs, Ireland bounced back in the sixth to produce a scoreless frame for Minnesota, punching out two batters to finish with his final tally of seven strikeouts on the night.
Iowa extended their lead to seven runs in the seventh, with Ben Norman coming in to score on an Austin Martin fielder's choice to second.
Down 7-0, the Minnesota offense broke into the scoring column in the ninth. After Zack Raabe led off with a double down the right field line, Chase Stanke advanced Raabe to third with a single to right. Pinch hitter Cody Kelly then drove in Raabe on a fielder's choice, bringing the game to its eventual final score of 7-1.
Despite not allowing an earned run, Ireland was saddled with the loss in game one, allowing six runs (zero earned) in the outing. Reliever Drake Davis provided two scoreless, no-hit innings of relief, striking out one.
Wallace earned the win, pitching six shutout innings on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Brett Bateman (2-for-5) and Raabe (2-for-5) were the lone Gophers to collect multiple hits in the game, with Raabe's ninth inning double representing Minnesota's only extra-base hit.
