MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota baseball team dropped both ends of their Sunday doubleheader against Iowa, falling by respective scores of 6-1 and 18-0.
Game One
Minnesota came up short in game one by a final tally of 6-1.
For the majority of game one, Minnesota and Iowa played competitive baseball, with Iowa's largest lead representing a one-run advantage up until the seventh inning. All seven runs in the game were scored via the home run.
The Hawkeyes got the scoring started in the second, as Dylan Nedved gave the Hawkeyes a 1-0 lead on a solo home run to right field.
Minnesota promptly answered back with a solo shot of their own in the top of the third, with Ronald Sweeny launching a moon shot to right to knot the game up at 1-1. The third inning homer marked Sweeny's third of the season.
From that point on, the Gophers would be held in check while Iowa proceeded to plate five more runs. Ben Norman was credited with the game-winning RBI, hitting a solo home run to center in the third inning to put Iowa back on top, 2-1.
With the lead in hand, Iowa scored two runs on a Brett McCleary two-run homer to right field in the seventh and another two came in to score on a Zeb Adrean two-run home run in the eighth.
Despite being saddled with the loss, Minnesota starting pitcher Jack Liffrig had a strong outing. The left-hander pitched seven innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits and striking out one.
Iowa starter Drew Irvine earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on two hits and four walks while striking out six.
Jack Wassel (2-for-4) was the lone Gopher to collect multiple hits in the game, also chipping in one of two Minnesota extra-base hits with a ninth inning double.
Game Two
The Gophers were defeated by Iowa in game two of Sunday's doubleheader by an 18-0 score.
Much differently from game one, Iowa jumped out to a large lead in game two and controlled the matchup from start to finish. The Hawkeyes plated seven runs in the first inning, highlighted by RBI doubles off the bats of Trenton Wallace, Austin Martin, Brendan Sher and Norman.
Iowa tacked on five more runs in the second to extend their leads to 12-0. Wallace drove in the first run with an RBI single to right, while the following four runs came in to score on a pair of Gopher errors.
In the fourth, Izaya Fullard drove in Iowa's 13th run with an RBI double to right field. The Hawkeyes later added two more runs in the seventh inning, with the first crossing home on an Adreon RBI single and the second coming in as Matthew Sosa grounded into a double play.
Iowa plated three more runs in the eighth inning to bring the score to its final tally.
Gopher starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl received the loss, pitching two-thirds of an inning with five earned runs allowed on three hits and one walk, striking out one.
Hawkeye starting pitcher Cam Baumann earned the victory, producing five shutout innings on two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
Jack Kelly registered a multi-hit performance in the game, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
