MINNEAPOLIS – After competing in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend, the Minnesota men's golf team returns to the Hoosier State for this weekend's Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette.
The two-day event will take place at Kampen Golf Course, which is playing as a par-72 at 7,405 yards. Saturday will consist of 36 holes, beginning with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. CT. Sunday's tee times will be based on scores after two rounds of competition.
Minnesota is one of 16 teams in a field that features four teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches' Poll. Illinois is ranked No. 4, including one first-place vote, while host-Purdue, Northwestern and Ohio State are all receiving votes.
Rounding out this weekend's field are Ball State, Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Indiana, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Michigan State, Southern Illinois, Toledo and Wisconsin.
Representing Minnesota at the tournament this weekend will be seniors Angus Flanagan and Thomas Longbella, junior Lincoln Johnson, sophomore Harrison Arnold and freshman Ben Warian.
Five of the Gophers' top six scorers so far this season will be in competition. Flanagan has competed in all three of Minnesota's stroke play tournaments this spring, finishing 30th or better in each. He leads the Gophers in scoring average (73.11), rounds under par (3), and lowest rounds of 18 (68) and 54 holes (212).
Johnson ranks second with a scoring average of 75.11. He is coming off a tie for seventh at last weekend's Hoosier Collegiate Invitational, which was the best finish of his career and the best by a Gopher this season. Longbella, third on the team at 75.50, is back in action this weekend after not competing at the Hoosier Invitational.
Arnold (77.00) will be competing for the second weekend in a row after tying for 34th at the Hoosier Invite, while Warian (76.83) is hoping to build off his 21st-place finish last weekend. He a career-low round of 73 Sunday.
As a team, Minnesota is coming off its best finish of the season, placing sixth out of nine teams at the Hoosier Invitational.
