The No. 23 University of Minnesota softball team earned a 4-0 win over Penn State, tonight in University Park, Pa. The Golden Gophers (27-10) hit a pair of home runs, while Amber Fiser pitched a one-hit shutout to open the series.
Natalie DenHartog hit a home run, went 1-4 with three RBIs, while Sara Kinch also hit a home run and went 1-3. Ellee Jensen was 2-3 with a run scored, and Carlie Brandt was 1-2 with a run scored. Amber Fiser pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout and improved to 14-7 this year.
Minnesota put up a crooked number in the top of the third when DenHartog hit a three-run home run and a 3-0 lead. Carlie Brandt started the inning off with a walk, while Ellee Jensen hit a bunt single. DenHartog hit one off the PSU scoreboard for her 12th home run of the season and 36th of her career. She is now tied for sixth in school history in career home runs.
Minnesota added to its lead when Kinch hit a solo home run, her seventh of the season.
The DenHartog home run would be all the runs needed for starter Fiser. She threw a total of 90 total pitches when she allowed just the one hit, two walks and three strikeouts. It was her 12th complete game of the season and 75th of her career. It also marked the 26th shutout of her career.
Minnesota and Penn State continues the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. The first Saturday game will be at 3 p.m. CT on BTN +, followed by the second game of the day at 6 p.m., on BTN.
