Gophers Finish Season at 29-11, Await NCAA Fate

Minnesota dropped a 4-1 decision at Penn State on Sunday

The University of Minnesota softball team dropped a 4-1 road decision at Penn State in the final game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Nittany Lion Softball Park.

Minnesota finished the regular season, which was contested against all Big Ten teams, at 29-11. The Gophers will find out their NCAA postseason fate later on this evening. Penn State finished the season 7-34.

Minnesota, which had outscored Penn State 22-3 in winning the first three games of the series, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a MaKenna Partain home run off of Logan Black. The solo shot to left field was her seventh of the season and came on a cloudy, 61-degree day in Pennsylvania.

Amber Fiser was in the circle for the Gophers. She earned victories against Penn State in Game 1 (4-0) and Game 3 (10-0) of the series, as she allowed only four hits in two complete game shutout wins. Fiser struck out 11 batters in 14 innings.

On Sunday, after being perplexed by Fiser for two games, Penn State finally got to the Minnesota ace. The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the first and added to more runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 4-1 lead.

Fiser (15-8) was replaced by Ava Dueck after 1.2 innings and the sophomore pitched the remaining 4.1 innings. Dueck allowed two hits, struck out three and did not allow a run in relief.

Penn State replaced Black in the circle after the first inning with Vanessa Oatley (4-5) and the sophomore stymied the Minnesota bats for the final six innings. Oatley yielded three hits, two walks and struck out three as she threw 102 pitches to 23 batters in the win.

Minnesota threatened in the fourth as it loaded the bases with two outs, but Natalie DenHartog struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Gophers totaled five hits and collected four walks in the game, but left eight runners on base as it finished the season 10-2 on the road. Minnesota's only other road setback was a loss at Illinois on March 28.
