WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A pair of early leads weren't enough on Saturday evening as the Gopher baseball program dropped a 7-3 decision to Penn State to open this weekend's Big Ten pod at Purdue's Alexander Field.
Noah Deluga (0-3) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (5-30) while Drew Hmielewski was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 2.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out four.
Offensively, the Golden Gophers were paced by Ronald Sweeny, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBIs. Zack Raabe compiled a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Golden Gophers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning thanks to Sweeny's RBI double.
The Nittany Lions then tied the ballgame at one before the Golden Gophers came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Raabe, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota's lead had evaporated by the time the eighth inning came around and turned into a 7-2 Penn State advantage, when the Golden Gophers cut that deficit to 7-3. The Golden Gophers scored once more on an RBI single off the bat of Sweeny.
