Bethany Hasz led the Gophers with a third-place finish in the 5,000 meters on the final day of the NCAA Championships.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Bethany Hasz finished third in the women's 5,000 meters to lead the Golden Gophers on the final day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on Saturday.

Hasz clocked an outdoor career-best time of 15:30.57 to place third and improve on her own Minnesota program record in the 5,000 meters. Her bronze medal capped off an outstanding 2020-21 season, during which she also earned a top-eight finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships and finished as NCAA runner-up in the indoor 5,000 meters.

Other Saturday action for the Maroon & Gold saw Abby Kohut-Jackson finish 11th in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking a time of 9:50.89 in the final after running a career-best of 9:41.20 in the NCAA semifinal heats. Shelby Frank joined Kohut-Jackson in making her NCAA debut with a throw of 54.22m (177-11 ft.) for 16th place in women's discus.

"Obviously I'm very happy for our three top-three finishers," director of track & field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "I don't know if we've ever done that before. Alec, Bethany, and Kostas all had great seasons. I'm super happy for Abby Kohut-Jackson and the success she's had breaking the school record again out here too. It was a good weekend for the group. Almost all of them return next year, and we'll be looking for them all to take that next step. I appreciate the efforts from the staff and student-athletes to make it a good weekend and a great season for us."

The Minnesota women closed out the meet tied for 40th in the team standings with six points from Hasz's third-place finish. Meanwhile, the Gopher men tied for 20th in the team standings with 14 points behind eight points from Alec Basten's runner-up finish in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and six points from Kostas Zaltos's third-place showing in men's hammer throw.

The collegiate season comes to a close with the conclusion of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, but the Gophers will be represented at the U.S. Olympic Trials coming up on Friday, June 18 through Sunday, June 27 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
