MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota rowing program has announced its team awards for the 2021 season with five student-athletes being honored by the Maroon & Gold.
A native of Hobart, Tasmania, Lauren Burrows-Cheng represented the University of Minnesota as the Varsity Most Valuable Rower after earning First Team All-Big Ten honors this season for the Gophers. The senior Academic All-Big Ten selection competed with the First Varsity Eight boat in all 11 races during the 2021 season including an appearance at the Big Ten championships.
A native of Bregenz, Austria, Sarah Reimann was recognized with the Deborah Olson Award for best exemplifying the values and characteristics of Gopher Rowing. The senior was in action with the First Varsity Eight boat in all 11 races this season including the Big Ten championships while also excelling in the classroom as a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection.
A native of Kenosha, Wis., Maddie Motzel was named the Varsity Most Improved Rower. The junior competed in eight races during the 2021 season between the First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Four and represented the Maroon & Gold at the Big Ten championships with the First Varsity Four boat.
A native of Fergus Falls, Minn., Vanessa Konynenbelt has been named the Novice Most Valuable Rower after competing with the First Novice Eight boat in all eight races during the 2021 campaign. The Academic All-Big Ten honoree capped off her season by representing the Maroon & Gold at the 2021 Big Ten championships.
A native of Middleton, Wis., Casey Wempner was recognized with the team's Novice Spirit Award. The Academic All-Big Ten selection competed in six races for the Gophers in 2021 between the First Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight and represented the program at the Big Ten championships as a member of the Second Novice Eight boat.
Minnesota celebrated a successful return to the water in 2021 after waiting more than a year to compete due to COVID-19 public health concerns. The Maroon & Gold climbed the Pocock/CRCA Division I Rankings all the way to No. 14 for the program's highest national ranking since 2008. The Gophers also celebrated a new program record with 42 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and set a new team record with a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (the fifth-straight semester the team has improved its performance in the classroom).
