The best of college women's golf comes to the Twin Cities metro area this week as the Minnesota women's golf team opens the 2021-22 season and co-hosts the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M on Sept 13-15.

Fans are encouraged to come out and watch the action in the three-day tournament at the Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn., with free admission. Live scoring will be provided throughout the tournament via Golfstat at the link above.

Minnesota will host the field of twelve including Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Duke, LSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas, Wake Forest, UCLA and USC.

Geraldine Wong leads the Gophers in the No. 1 spot of the lineup, followed by Joanne Free, Grace Curran, Emma Carpenter and Leah Herzog

Wong, a graduate transfer, will compete in her first tournament for Minnesota after arriving from Texas State where she spent three seasons competing. She started her career with one year at Central Arkansa. As a senior, Wong led Texas State in stroke average at 73.5. She had one top-five tournament finish with the Bobcats and her season low was a 68. During her junior year, Wong averaged 75.15 and carded a season-low 67. The year prior, her average was 75.26. Wong was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year following her 2017-18 season with Central Arkansas, and she was also named 2019 All Sun Belt Conference Second Team while with Texas State.

After making her first appearance of the spring at the Florida State Match-Up where she tied for 34th, Free led the Gophers by shooting a 223 (75-73-75) to place T-20 at the Briar's Creek Invitational the following week. She tied for ninth overall (76-74-72--222) and set a career-best finish at the Indiana Spring Challenge before she recorded two birdies and finished the season in 48th at the Big Ten Championship (79-71-78--228, +12). This summer, Free won the 2021 Minnesota Golf Association Women's Match Play Championship and qualified for the 2021 U.S. Women's Amateur.

Curran led the team in average (74.22), top ten finishes (1) and top 20 finishes (3) after competing in all six spring tournaments. She was the top finisher for the Gophers and posted a career-low 54-hole score (219) and a career-low final round score (71) at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate. She followed that performance with a career-best finish when she tied for sixth overall at the Florida State Match-Up. Curran was the winner of the 2021 Illinois State Amateur Championship during the summer.

Carpenter also competed in each of the six tournaments during the spring of 2021. The Dekalb, Ill. native opened the season at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate where she finished tied for 39th. Her top performance of her sophomore campaign came at the Indiana Spring Challenge, finishing 14th overall and shooting par in the third round (76-76-72--224).

Herzog will make her first appearance in the Maroon and Gold after transferring to Minnesota from Nebraska, spending two years with the Huskers. Herzog was one of the top Minnesota prospects in 2019 and was named Minnesota Ms. Golf. She finished state runner-up in 2018 and 2019 while attending Red Wing High School and led Red Wing to a state championship in 2019. Herzog did not compete for Nebraska in 2020-21, but enjoyed a solid start to her freshman season in 2019-20 before it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a freshman, she recorded a 76.65 stroke average (fifth-best ever for a Nebraska freshman) and was one of only two Nebraska student-athletes to play in all 17 rounds. She shot 66 (-6) in the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge to post the best round by a true freshman in Nebraska history.
