Lindsay Eliasen, Gabby Mullally and Casey Wempner will lead the Gophers this year.

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota rowing program and head coach Alicea Strodel have announced team captains for the 2021-22 season with Lindsay Eliasen, Gabby Mullally and Casey Wempner leading the Maroon & Gold.

Eliasen and Mullally return as captains for the second-straight year while Wempner joins the leadership group this year.

"Gabby and Lindsay will continue to serve in their captainships. Having consistency in our leadership, messaging and values was really important to me in stabilizing our team culture. Casey was nominated by her teammates as a young voice and leader; she'll bring a fresh perspective to the table, "Strodel said. "I'm excited to have these representatives from the junior, senior and fifth-year classes continue to lead our team forward."

A Second Team All-Big Ten selection for Minnesota last season, Eliasen heads into her fifth season with the 'U' after competing in all 11 races with the First Varsity Eight last year. The Chanhassen, Minn., native earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the third-straight year in 2021 and was also recognized as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and an Academic All-Big Ten pick.

"I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of such an amazing team for another year," Eliasen said. "It's a privilege to row for Minnesota, and I am looking forward to being able to support my teammates as we make strides this season."

A native of Neenah, Wis., Mullally also competed in all 11 races with the First Varsity Eight last year while earning Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honors. The 2021-21 season marks her fourth season at Minnesota and third with the varsity squad.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to spend another year leading this team," Mullally said. "Even in the midst of the pandemic, we saw a lot of girls have breakthrough seasons last year, which makes me really excited for what's to come. Fall season is just around the corner, and I'm looking forward to getting back out on the water with the team!"

Wempner joins the Gophers varsity ranks after competing with the novice team in six races last year including an appearance at the Big Ten championships. A native of Middleton, Wis., Wempner earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was selected as the recipient of the team's Novice Spirit Award. The 2021-22 season marks her third overall season at Minnesota.

"It is an honor and privilege to represent an incredible group of women who have had such a profound impact on my life," Wempner said. "This past year has shown the resilience and strength, physically and mentally, of my teammates and their drive to establish Gopher Rowing. I am proud and humbled to serve this team, and I am beyond excited to see what we will achieve this season."
