MINNEAPOLIS – Two members of the Minnesota women's golf team are in the top five following Monday's opening round of the Golfweek Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colorado.

Grace Curran and Geraldine Wong are both in a tie for fifth place following 18 holes of play. Meanwhile, as a team, the Gophers sit in 12th out of 20 teams with a score of 290, just two strokes over par.

"We had many positives out on the course today," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "Obviously the 68's from Grace [Curran] and Geri [Geraldine Wong] were clutch, and I'm super proud of the way they executed today. Emma [Carpenter] fought all day to produce her lowest first round in her collegiate career. Shooting a 290 as a team is a really positive step in the direction this team is headed."

Curran posted one of the lowest total scores for Minnesota in round one with a 4-under par 68. She started the day with a bogey, but bounced back with three birdies in the front nine. In the back nine, she paired two bogeys with four birdies.

Along with Curran, Wong tied for fifth with the other low score for the Maroon and Gold. Three birdies highlighted her first nine holes to be 3-under at the turn. Two more birdies and one bogey on the back nine put her at 4-under on the day.

Emma Carpenter's opening round was the best in her collegiate career and featured two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey. The junior ended the first round in a tie for 60th at 3-over par (75), Junior Leah Herzog shot a 7-over 79 to tie for 95th. She recorded three birdies on the day. Joanne Free rounded out the lineup in a tie for 97th at 8-over par.

Northern Arizona and East Tennessee State sit in a tie for first place in the team competition at 9-under par (279). Individually, Brigham Young's Kerstin Fotu and Denver's Anna Cathrine Krekling are in first at 6-under (66).

The second round of the Golfweek Challenge is set to take place Tuesday morning. Minnesota will begin its day with Free teeing off at 10:50 a.m. CT followed by Herzog, Carpenter, Curran and Wong in 10-minute increments afterward.
