MINNEAPOLIS-- The University of Minnesota women's golf team finished their second day at the Golfweek Challenge Tuesday evening. The Maroon and Gold are in ninth place (290-300--590) after 36 holes of play and Geraldine Wong leads the way individually in a tie for fifth.
"These were some of the toughest conditions we've played in," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "Not only did the weather fluctuate from warm and sunny to brutally cold, windy and raining, we also had a 12 hour day to complete 18 holes. I am so proud of the tenacity of this team to grind out the day and find a way to make birdies coming in. We moved up the leaderboard today and should record a top nine finish. Geri [Geraldine Wong] was amazing today and had to really grind to be in the top five. Also, Jo's [Joanne Free] bounce back today was crucial."Ā
Play was paused for nearly three hours due to rain and lightning surrounding the Red Sky Golf Club in Vail, Colo., and was ultimately suspended due to darkness. The Gophers, along with three other teams in Pepperdine, Rutgers and Delaware, completed their second round, while the other 16 teams will finish their round Wednesday morning. The tournament will be reduced to a 36-hole event after the weather delay.Ā
Wong was the top finisher for the Gophers and is currently in a tie for fifth (68-73--141) after two rounds of play. Her front nine saw a 3-over performance, but she improved on the day to produce a 2-under back nine and finish the tournament at 3-under par. Her four birdies were the most for the team.Ā
Grace Curran follows in a tie for 17th. After exchanging a bogey and a birdie on the first and second hole, Curran was at even-par at the turn. A 4-over back nine put her at even-par for the tournament (68-76--144).Ā
After a difficult opening round, Joanne Free rebounded with a strong performance in the second round. Three birdies highlighted her 1-over day to finish at 9-over for the tournament in a tie for 73rd (80-73--153). Also finishing in a tie for 73rd was Emma Carpenter (75-78--153). The junior recorded an eagle on the par-4 third hole and shot 6-over in the second round. Junior Leah Herzog finished in 103rd (79-89--168).
Teams needing to complete their second round will tee off at 10:45 a.m. CT. Live scoring for the final holes of the event and final results can be found via Golfstat.com.
