Gophers Top Tommies 5-2 in Exhibition

Five Gophers scored while Justen Close picked up the win.
SOUTH ST. PAUL, Minn. – Five Gophers found the net as the Minnesota men's hockey team earned a 5-2 exhibition win over St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon at a sold out Doug Woog Arena.
While St. Thomas scored 11 seconds in, the Maroon & Gold paced play for most of the contest as Colin Schmidt, Bryce Brodzinski, Jaxon Nelson, Ben Meyers and Matt Denman scored goals for the 'U'. Minnesota outshot St. Thomas 45-15 overall on Sunday.
Behind the offensive showing, Justen Close picked up the exhibition win for the Gophers, playing all 60 minutes and stopping 13-of-15 shots against. Minnesota was 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill with Nelson's tally standing as a shorthanded goal.

Minnesota is back in action with another exhibition game on Monday evening as the Gophers host the U.S. National Under-18 Team at 3M Arena at Mariucci (Stream: B1G+; Radio: 1130 KTLK/103.5 FM).
