A late rally earned Minnesota its 150th all-time win against Michigan.
MINNEAPOLIS – U.S. Olympic selections Matthew Knies and Ben Meyers scored and Justen Close backstopped the No. 11 Gopher men's hockey team to a 2-1 overtime win over No. 4/3 Michigan on Friday night at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Minnesota (14-9-0 overall, 9-4-0-1-1-0 Big Ten) rallied in the third period for the second time this year and earned its 150th all-time win against the Wolverines as Close made a career-high 26 saves to improve to 2-1-0 on the year. Erik Portillo made 23 saves for Michigan (18-7-1, 9-6-0-0-3-0).
While the Wolverines struck first with a second period goal from Dylan Duke at 12:25, Knies found the equalizer 4:43 into the third period for his ninth goal of the season. Chaz Lucius and Carl Fish notched assists on the play.
The Gophers appeared to win the game when Blake McLaughlin put the puck in the net in the final seconds, but a review found that the forward kicked at the puck before it entered the net.
Instead, Minnesota had to wait 1:08 into the overtime session as Meyers blasted home the winner for his team-leading 10th of the year. The power-play goal was set up by Jackson LaCombe and Lucius as the Maroon & Gold snapped Michigan's stretch of consecutive successful penalty kills at 28.
The game winner came during a five-minute major to the Wolverines taken in the third period. Minnesota was 1-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. Michigan held a 27-25 advantage on shots.
