Relays Shine as Gophers Split Triple Duals

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota swimming and diving teams split their tri-duals Saturday at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The 21st-ranked women's team defeated Iowa, 299-41, but fell to No. 17 Northwestern 183-170. On the men's side, the Gophers also fell to the Wildcats, 188.5-164.5, but topped Purdue, 190-163.
The Golden Gophers won five events Saturday, highlighted by an 'A' qualifying mark and school record in the women's 200 free relay, and recorded eight 'B' cuts, as well as 14 personal bests.
"We've had a lot of triple-dual meets over the years and this was by far the fastest triple-dual meet we've ever had," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "Everybody swam and dove well, so it was as competitive as it could have been.
"Speaking for our team, I thought we had some really nice performances. Since we made the changes to the NCAAs in terms of how we qualify our relays, we haven't made an 'A' standard outside of the Big Ten championships before, so to watch our women swim an 'A' standard to start off this afternoon gives you an idea of how high the quality of swimming was at this meet."
In the very first race of the day, the Gophers foursome of senior Olivia Bloomer, freshman Hannah Cornish, junior Maggie Summit and junior Grace Bennin combined for a 1:28.43 mark in the 200 free relay. That matched the automatic qualifying standard for NCAA's and tied a school record that was set at the 2013 Big Ten Championships by Rebecca Weiland, Erin Caflisch, Brooke Zeiger and Lauren Votava.
The men's team also picked up a relay victory by tying Northwestern for first in the 400 free relay to cap the day. Redshirt senior Tom Donker, redshirt sophomore Lucas Farrar, freshman Chris Morris and freshman Bar Soloveychik earned the tie with a time of 2:56.28.
In the same event for the women, Cornish, junior Jordan McGinty, Bloomer and Summit earned the second 'B' cut of the season in a relay for the team as they combined for a 3:15.82 mark.
After winning the 100 breast Friday night, McHugh swept the event Saturday with a win in the 200. His 'B' cut of 1:52.57 was nearly two seconds faster than second place.
Also posting an individual win for the men was Soloveychik, who won the 500 free in a time of 4:23.67. It was his third fastest time in the event this year and his second win. Soloveychik also established a personal best in the 100 free with his time of 44.87, exactly one second better than his previous best.
The final win of the day for the Golden Gophers belonged to sophomore Megan Van Berkom. She dominated the field in the 400 IM with a 'B' cut of 4:09.81. No other swimmer was within seven seconds of her. In addition, Van Berkom also logged a 'B' mark in the 500 free with a personal best of 4:46.28.
The Minnesota women had four additional 'B' cuts on the day thanks to junior Rachel Butler in the 400 IM (4:16.98), sophomore Indy Jongman in the 200 back (1:56.84), Cornish in the 100 free (48.77) and McGinty in the 100 fly (53.76).
Junior Gavin Olson also had a 'B' cut for the men in the 200 back, touching the wall in 1:44.70.
The divers in action Saturday competed in a platform exhibition. Minnesota's women were led by sophomore Susanna Fish, who finished third with a score of 276.95. Freshman Kate LaMonica was fourth with a 269.70, while senior Joy Zhu (248.30) and sophomore Av Osero (235.35) took eighth and ninth, respectively.
Junior Jake Butler was the only Minnesota men's diver to compete on the platform, finishing sixth with a score of 300.50.
