Personal and Season Bests Fall for Gophers at First Chance Meet

2/5/2022 8:16:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up its First Chance Meet Saturday after two days and three sessions of competition at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

With no team scores, relays or diving, the weekend served as a chance for members of the team to improve on their times heading into the Big Ten championships. The Golden Gophers responded with one NCAA 'B' cut, 23 personal records and 47 season-best performances after competition was completed.

The highlight performance of the weekend belonged to sophomore Holley Dennis, who posted an NCAA 'B' cut in the 100 breast Friday with a time of 1:01.41, a time that also went down as a personal best. She almost repeated her performance in the 200 breast, touching the wall in 2:14.00. That left her just .03 off another 'B' cut, though it still was a personal record.

Dennis was one of six Gophers who set multiple personal records on the weekend.

Junior Isaac Barrera did so in three events, including both the 100 fly (48.16) and 200 fly (1:47.07). He also hit a personal best in the 200 IM, recording a time of 1:48.25 that is the fastest on the team so far this season.

Freshman Tommy McCarthy had the high mark on the weekend with four personal bests set. The Edina, Minn., native hit his marks in the 100 fly (49.63), 100 back (50.11), 200 back (1:49.89) and 200 IM (1:54.06).

Sophomores Maeve O'Driscoll and Katia Soudakova logged personal bests in the same three events: 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. O'Driscoll went 23.11 in the 50, 50.21 in the 100 and 1:51.11 in the 200, while Soudakova recorded times of 23.54, 50.86 and 1:48.72, respectively, in the same events.

The sixth Gopher to record multiple PR's on the weekend was freshman Summer West. Her bests came in the distance events, accomplishing the feats in the 500 free (4:50.04) and 1650 free (16:48.44).

Minnesota now turns its attention to the Big Ten Championships. The women are set to compete, Feb. 16-19, in Madison, Wis., while the men hit the pool the week afterward in West Lafayette, Ind.
