Gophers Trounce Tommies in First Meeting

1/8/2022 8:00:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Six different goal-scorers lit the lamp for Minnesota to open the second half of the season with an 8-0 victory.

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 5 Golden Gopher women's hockey team rang in the 2022 with an 8-0 victory over St. Thomas in the first-ever matchup between the two programs on Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.

Minnesota's (15-5-1) showed no signs of rust after a month off by notching four first period goals to set the tone for a dominant night. Madeline Wethington scored just under four minutes into the game to record the first goal against the Tommies in program history. Savannah Norcross and Abigail Boreen each matched career-highs with two goals in the contest. Peyton Hemp, Ella Huber, and Amy Potomak rounded out the scoring for Minnesota.

Skylar Vetter got the start for the Maroon and Gold and earned her first career shutout. The freshman goaltender stopped all 16 shots for her fourth career victory. St. Thomas' Dobchuk made 50 saves in the losing effort.

Quotable
"A really good win here tonight," said head coach Brad Frost. "A great way to start the second half. There was a little adversity with some people out of the lineup, but I have a feeling that's going to be standard here as we go forward. Overall, a really good performance and a shutout for Skylar Vetter – her first one. We're looking forward to getting back to it tomorrow."

Notable
Minnesota scored first for the 19th time this season and improved to 13-0-1 when leading after 20 minutes. Freshman goaltender Skylar Vetter earned her first career shutout. Peyton Hemp scored her first career shorthanded goal while freshman Tristana Tatur earned her first career point with an assist. Sophomore defenseman Maggie Nicholson recorded a career high three assists.
