Maroon & Gold Finish in 6th Within a Strong Field at the Sunflower Invitational
10/18/2022 5:50:00 PM | Women's Golf
Lawrence, Kan. – The Gopher women's golf team completed rounds 2 and 3 of the Sunflower Invitational to complete the tournament today. The third round was abbreviated to nine holes due to weather conditions. The team ended the event in 6th place with a team score of 300-319-150—769. Isabella McCauley's three-round score of six-over par (186) earned her a tie for 6th place individually.
Kent State placed 1st with a team score of 289-298-154—741.
Quotable:
"This was quite the roller coaster of a tournament. We had the 2nd best team score in rounds 1 & 3 and the worst team score in round 2," said coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "With that said I'm super proud of the way the team grinded in some of the coldest and windy conditions I've ever seen. This course was really difficult and we had to play our best physically and mentally. We got wins over some highly ranked teams so heading into off season we're in a good position."
Notable:
Freshman Isabella McCauley collected one birdie in the second round before grabbing three more in the third round. She headlined the Gophers with a tie for 6th and a three-round score of 74-74-38—186, going two-over par (74) in the second round and two-over par (38) in the final round.
Fellow freshman Luisamariana Mesones snagged two birdies in each of the last two rounds, scoring nine-over par (81) and one-under par (35) in round two and three respectively. Her three-round score of 77-81-35—193 ranked 20th in the tournament.
Senior Emma Carpenter also tied for 20th with a three-round score of 73-82-38—193. She notched one birdie across the final two rounds, concluding with a second-round score of ten-over par (82) and third-round score of two-over par (38) on the final day of competition.
Grace Curran closed out the Sunflower Invitational in a tie for 36th after going ten-over par (82) in round two and three-over par (39) in round three. She recorded a three-round score of 76-82-39—197.
Leah Herzog wrapped up the tournament with a second-round score of fourteen-over par (86) and logged a birdie on her path to a third-round score of nine-over par (45). She ended the event in 83rd.
