Blue Line's Offense Pushes Gophers to Series Sweep
10/2/2022 11:00:00 PM | Men's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS - It was the defense corps that provided the offense to secure the series sweep for the Golden Gophers men's hockey team in a 6-4 win over Lindenwood inside 3M Arena at Mariucci as the group accounted for eight points Sunday night.
Â
The newcomers got the offense started, but it was the veterans from the blue line that took charge late in the game as Brock Faber and Mike Koster combined for five total points. Koster's power-play shot from the point was tipped in by senior Bryce Brodzinski for the eventual game-winning goal in the third period that completed the come-from-behind win.
Â
After a timid start to the contest, the Gophers started to get moving five minutes in and freshman Charlie Strobel found space down the right wing, but his shot to the left corner was kicked aside. It was another freshman that opened the scoring at the 7:58 mark as Connor Kurth took a Faber bank pass in stride and skated in from center ice. The Lindstrom, Minn., native weaved into the slot and unleashed a wrister to the top corner putting the Maroon and Gold in front, 1-0. Garrett Pinoniemi started the play winning a defensive zone faceoff as both players earned their first collegiate points.
Â
Minnesota was able to maintain its one-goal edge into the first intermission despite allowing a power-play tally by the Lions. Matthew Knies continued his hot start to the year, tipping in a Faber shot from the point during a 4-on-4 situation recording his second goal in as many nights with 2:35 remaining in the period.
Â
While the end of the opening frame was marred by penalties, the second stanza took a different turn as the teams combined for four goals in a span of five minutes and quickly traded leads. The Lions pulled even taking advantage of a Minnesota turnover and made it a 2-2 game scoring on a breakaway. A screened shot by the visitors found its way through 75 seconds later pushing to a 3-2 lead. Lindenwood's margin was short lived as Brody Lamb netted his first goal as a Gopher ripping a shot from the top of the circle helping the home side tie the game, 3-3.
Â
Having already picked up a pair of assists on his team's first two goals of the night, it was Faber's turn to find the back of the net 2:02 after the Lamb tally. The junior captain collected a loose puck in the offensive zone and fired a shot past the blocker giving Minnesota a 4-3 lead that carried through the end of the period.
Â
Lindenwood again fought back and got the equalizer 59 seconds into the third period on its second extra-man goal on the night. The Gophers were not going to be denied, scoring the next two goals on the man advantage thanks to the play of Koster along the blue line. The junior sent a shot on frame that Brodzinski redirected in securing the go-ahead goal before the Chaska, Minn., product buried a marker of his own with nine minutes to play in regulation giving Minnesota a two-goal cushion, 6-4.
Â
The Gophers held off the Lions down the stretch, closing out the non-conference victory that gave Owen Bartoszkiewicz his first collegiate win in goal. The Northville, Mich., native turned away 27 shots as he made his Maroon and Gold debut. The home side held a 45-31 edge in shots on goal and had six different goal scorers in the contest, while 13 players had at least one point.
Â

Coach Motzko's Comments
"We had to respond because all of the sudden we were down and getting out-shot," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "It was self-inflicted wounds and we needed to stop that. We needed to play a better brand of hockey. Then I really felt that the last seven or eight minutes of the second period, we turned the tide and got going."
