The University of Minnesota men's basketball team fell, 69-53 to the DePaul Blue Demons, Monday night at Williams Arena. With the loss, the Golden Gophers fall to 2-1 this season, while DePaul improved to 3-0 this year. With the loss, the Gophers are also 2-2 in Gavitt Tipoff Games.

Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (2-1) with 19 points and six rebounds, Pharrel Payne had 12 points and four boards, and Ta'Lon Cooper added 10 points, six assists, four rebounds, and three steals in a 69-53 loss. Javan Johnson paced the Blue Demons (3-0) with a game-high 20 points, while Eral Penn recorded a double-double with a game-high 14 boards to go with 10 points. The loss for Minnesota snapped a 16-game non-conference home winning streak.

Minnesota made 6 of 11 field goals to start the game and led 16-14 with 12:09 left in the first half on a dunk by Payne. But the Gophers then missed their next 12 shots, as DePaul took a 24-16 lead before another Payne dunk stopped the skid. Minnesota pulled within 24-20 on a pair of Jaden Henley free throws with 4:20 remaining in the half, but the Blue Demons responded with a 10-2 run to take a 34-22 lead to the locker room. Payne led the Gophers with 10 points at the break, but the Gophers were just 8-of-30 (.267) from the field, including 1-of-8 from three-point range.

DePaul opened the second half by making 6-of-7 field goals to stretch the lead to 49-30 with 14:22 left, but Minnesota answered by turning up the pressure on defense and going on a 12-2 run to get back within single digits at 51-42 on a three-pointer from Garcia. The Gophers cut the deficit to eight points, 57-49, on a putback layup by Joshua Ola-Joseph with 6:16 left, but DePaul went on a 9-1 run to push the lead back to 16 points and remained unbeaten early this season.

Minnesota is back in action on Thursday night when Central Michigan comes to town. Game time is set for 8 p.m. at Williams Arena.
