STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 9 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team fell to the No. 14 Penn State Nittany Lions in four sets, 18-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-27 on Friday night at Rec Hall.
Taylor Landfair led the 'U' with 17 kills, nine digs and four blocks while Jenna Wenaas went for 12 kills and nine digs. Melani Shaffmaster paced the offense with 40 assists and 10 digs.
As a team, Minnesota (17-8, 12-5 Big Ten) hit .211 with 50 kills, 13 team blocks, 48 digs and four aces. Penn State (22-6, 11-6 Big Ten) hit .273 with 61 kills, 12 team blocks, 57 digs and seven aces.
Kashauna Williams led Penn State with 20 kills.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers scored five of the first eight to take an early 5-3 lead. They got a block from Carter Booth and Lauren Crowl, a kill from Taylor Landfair and a block from Arica Davis and Melani Shaffmaster in the initial spurt. Penn State would respond with a 4-1 run to go up 7-6, getting a pair of kills and their first service ace of the night. No team would lead by more than one until the 'U' took a 13-11 lead after getting kills from Shaffmaster and Jenna Wenaas. At the media timeout, Minnesota led PSU 15-12. The Nittany Lions answered back immediately, however, scoring five straight points to take a 17-15 lead and force a timeout from coach McCutcheon. PSU kept it going after the timeout, scoring four of the next six to take a 21-17 lead, continuing a 9-2 run and forcing another Minnesota timeout. Minnesota could get no closer after that as the home team closed out set one, 25-18. PSU finished the set on a 13-3 run after trailing 15-12. The Gophers hit .103 compared to .290 for the Nittany Lions. Wenaas led Minnesota with three kills while Davis had four blocks in set one.
Set 2: The two teams went back-and-forth through the first third of the set, exchanging points through the first 14. Landfair had a trio of early kills while Shaffmaster and Wenaas had one each. With the score tied 7-7, PSU went on a 3-0 run to take a 10-7 lead after getting a block, kill and Gophers service error. Minnesota would cut the lead to one at 11-10 after a kill from Wennas and a PSU attacking error, but the home team scored the next three to go up four, 14-10. The Nittany Lions led 15-11 heading into the media timeout. The Gophers cut the lead to three at 15-12, 17-14 and 18-15, but two straight points from PSU after that put the home team up 20-15, forcing a timeout from coach McCutcheon with the set one the line. PSU extended its lead to six at 22-16 after the timeout, forcing No. 2 from Minnesota. The Nittany Lions would close out the set with a 25-18 win.

Landfair tallied her 10th kill early in the set to clinch her 24th double digit kill match of 2022. The Gophers finally took a two-point lead at 11-9 after a PSU service error and a kill from Booth. Minnesota would extend its lead to a set-high four after two kills from Wenaas and one from Landfair to go up 15-11 into the media timeout. A service ace from Wenaas and a block from Naya Gros and Landfair put the 'U' up six at 17-11. After a point and an attacking error from the Nittany Lions, Mckenna Wucherer put home her first kill of the match, forcing the hosts to call a timeout trailing 19-12. PSU would cut the lead to four at 20-16 after a 4-0 run, but Wucherer ended that spurt with another kill. Minnesota went up 23-17 before a pair of kills and a Gophers attacking error brought the lead to just three at 23-20, causing coach McCutcheon to call a timeout. Minnesota would score the next two to take set three, 25-20.

Trailing 22-18, Minnesota went on a torrid 4-0 run to tie it up at 22, getting a kill and an ace from Wenaas and two kills from Landfair. After a PSU timeout, a block from Gros and Landfair put the Gophers ahead, 23-22. The Nittany Lions went up 24-23 before Landfair tied it with a kill. Penn State would eventually close it out, 27-25, winning the match 3-1.
