Gophers Take Extra Point in Series-Opening Tie

11/19/2022 5:40:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Both teams skated to a 3-3 stalemate with Minnesota earning the extra conference point in the shootout.

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 1/2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team opened this weekend's border battle series by taking two-of-three points from No. 3 Wisconsin in Saturday's 3-3 tie.

No. 1/2 Minnesota (9-1-2) surrendered the first goal of the game for the third time this season as Wisconsin's (10-2-1) Jungels scored just over eight minutes in. Sophomore Peyton Hemp answered with her fifth goal of the season late in the first on a penalty kill. The Badgers regained the lead early in the second, but it was Hemp and Grace Zumwinkle who answered once again to put the Gophers on top after two. Both teams traded chances throughout the third until Wisconsin evened the contest with 10.5 seconds remaining in regulation.

Neither team could find the back of the net in an end-to-end overtime period, leading to the Maroon and Gold's second tie of the season. Both teams went scoreless through two rounds in the shootout until Abbey Murphy scored to secure the extra point for Minnesota.

Sophomore Skylar Vetter made 40 saves for her second tie of the season. Wisconsin's Cami Kronish stopped 38 saves for the home team.

Quotable
"Another classic Gopher and Badger game," said head coach Brad Frost. "A lot of momentum both ways from two very skilled teams. I'm really proud of our group. Skylar Vetter played exceptional tonight. She loves these big moments and proved that again tonight. These are two big points and we're looking to getting back after it tomorrow."
