Gophers Win an Overtime Thriller Over California Baptist

11/22/2022 12:37:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia hit a five-foot lefty runner in the lane with 6.8 seconds remaining as the University of Minnesota fended off a late rally from California Baptist to post a 62-61 overtime win at the SoCal Challenge, tonight in San Juan Capistrano Calif. With the win, the Golden Gophers advance to the Championship game and will face the UNLV, Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. The Rebels defeated Southern Illinois, 56-49, also at JSerra Pavilion.

Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with his first career double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Jamison Battle returned from preseason surgery to finish with 11 points, and Garcia had 10.

Minnesota surged to a 15-0 lead to start the game and never trailed in regulation, but the Lancers (3-2) battled back from a 13-point deficit over the final 10 minutes and and had a three-point edge with 1:25 remaining in the overtime period. Taran Armstrong led the Lancers' rally, as he scored all 24 of his points after halftime.

The Gophers grabbed the early 15-0 lead, as Cal Baptist missed its first nine field goals while Minnesota got five points from Braeden Carrington, four from Garcia, and three points each from Payne and Treyton Thompson. Payne had a strong first half, as he dominated the paint for seven points and seven rebounds. Ta'Lon Cooper had eight points, seven rebounds, and seven assists for the Gophers.

It was Minnesota's first overtime win since Nov. 14, 2021, when the Gophers won in double-overtime to clinch the Asheville Championship last season. The Golden Gophers are now 1-0 away from Williams Arena this season.
