No. 3 Gophers Take Care of Irish, 4-1

11/4/2022 10:30:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Snuggerud, Knies combine for five points Friday

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 3 Minnesota men's hockey team fired 54 shots on goal and turned in a dominant effort during a 4-1 victory against No. 12 Notre Dame at 3M Arena at Mariucci Friday night.

The line of Jimmy Snuggerud, Logan Cooley and Matthew Knies came through with a huge offensive night, delivering a combined six points. Snuggerud scored a pair of goals over a seven-minute stretch in the third period to put away the Irish, while Knies tallied a goal and two assists, including a shorthanded tally during the second frame that turned out to be the game winner.

Minnesota (6-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 B1G) was in complete control from the opening faceoff and handled the visiting Irish (4-3-2 overall, 1-1-1 B1G) thanks to a wide, 54-25 margin in shots.

Rhett Pitlick found Jackson LaCombe in the high slot for an early opportunity as the Maroon and Gold carried play for the opening five minutes in its B1G home opener. Snuggerud found a sliver of space around the crease thanks to a nifty pass by Knies that pressured the Notre Dame goaltender at the 3:39 mark. The visitors were whistled for a penalty on the play that gave Snuggerud a penalty shot, the first of the year for the Gophers. The freshman was unable to convert, and the home side held the Irish without a shot six minutes into the contest.

Thanks to a late first-period infraction on Minnesota, ND was able to briefly build its offense as the man advantage carried over into the second stanza. The Gophers shut down the power play, going 3-for-3 on the penalty kill overall, and both sides generated scoring chances until Mason Nevers broke the scoreless tie 7:30 into the frame. Jaxon Nelson created a turnover behind the Irish net and got the puck to Nevers in the crease, where the junior went high glove for his fourth goal of the season. Connor Kurth picked up his first collegiate assist on the play winning a puck battle along the boards.

Justen Close came up clutch for the Gophers at the midpoint of the second period stopping a point-blank chance to keep the home side in front, 1-0. The Irish picked up their second power play of the game with seven minutes to play, but it was Minnesota that converted during the stretch as Knies pushed the puck around an ND player at the defensive blue line and sped in for a breakaway. The sophomore went to the backhand and slid the puck between the goaltender's legs, giving the Maroon and Gold a 2-0 edge that held into intermission.

Minnesota had its legs jumping in the third period and dominated possession in the offensive zone leading to chances by Logan Cooley and Snuggerud, looking to break the game open. Snuggerud eventually found the back of the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. He took a behind-the-back, no-look pass from below the goal line by Knies and blew it past the goaltender via a one-timer at the bottom of the left circle. Aaron Huglen nearly made it a four-goal cushion, but his shot from the slot rang off the pipe as the Gophers did not stop pressuring the Irish.

With 7:55 to play, Knies found himself on another clear break and had his stick snapped in half from a Notre Dame slash, leading to Minnesota's second penalty shot of the game. However, the home side elected to take the man advantage and forced the Irish to serve the minor penalty. Twelve seconds later, the Gophers moved to a 5-on-3 power play and it was Snuggerud that converted making it 4-0 when he fired into an open net as Knies delivered another beautiful feed. Notre Dame struck for a goal in the final minute of play as Minnesota claimed a 4-1 win on its home ice.
