B1G banner unveiling set for Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's hockey team returns to home ice for its next four games starting Nov. 4-5 when it hosts No. 12 Notre Dame for a Big Ten Conference series at 3M Arena at Mariucci. The No. 3 ranked Gophers meet the Fighting Irish at 7 p.m. both nights live on Bally Sports North Extra and streaming on B1G+ with audio coverage on the Gopher Radio Network 103.5 FM / AM 1130.

In honor of National Jersey Day on Friday, the first 1,000 fans attending the game receive a free Minnesota jersey rally towel. The team also will be holding an online auction for its "100 Seasons of Pride on Ice" throwback jerseys, which will go live Friday morning.

It'll be a special night Saturday as the 'U' will unveil its 2022 B1G regular season championship banner and honor its NCAA Frozen Four appearance during a pregame ceremony.

SLIP TO THREE
After a road loss at No. 11 Ohio State Oct. 28, Minnesota slipped to No. 3 in both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and DCU/USCHO.com national polls. The Maroon and Gold had spent two weeks in the top spot after being ranked No. 2 for the first three weeks of the campaign and are the only team in the country to be ranked no lower than No. 3 at any point this season.

CONSISTENTLY CHALLENGED
For the fourth-straight series, the Maroon and Gold will face off against a team ranked No. 12 or higher following weekends against No. 5 Minnesota State, No. 7 North Dakota and No. 11 Ohio State. The Gophers continue that stretch hosting No. 12 Notre Dame, a team that has suffered only one loss over its last seven outings after a win and tie in its Big Ten opening-series versus Michigan State. Minnesota is in the midst of an important stretch of games as it plays its second of four-consecutive series in league play.

HISTORY WITH THE IRISH
The Gophers own a 39-26-5 record all-time in meetings with Notre Dame, which includes a mark of 24-15-3 in home games dating back to the first matchup in 1925. Minnesota won three of the four meetings last year, including a home sweep in late October, and doubled up the opposition, outscoring the Irish by a margin of 14-7. Bryce Brodzinski could not be stopped a season ago as he tallied a goal in three of the four games played and finished with four points. Ryan Johnson and Jackson LaCombe matched his offensive output with four assists apiece, while Justen Close earned a road win Jan. 28 and had a 1.99 goals against average in two outings.

FEELING GOOD AT HOME
Minnesota won its first four games at home this season before falling in overtime Oct. 22 and have excelled on home ice inside 3M Arena at Mariucci of late winning nine of its last 11 games dating back to January. The Maroon and Gold have outscored its opponents by a 47-21 margin in that stretch, including three shutouts.

A POINT A DAY
Jackson LaCombe leads the Gophers in scoring this year from his spot along the blue line totaling 10 points in eight games. The senior has recorded at least one point in every game this season and found his goal-scoring touch of late with a goal in three of his last four games played. He now is one goal shy of tying his career best of four from the 2020-21 season.

STEADY SCORING
Sophomore Matthew Knies has delivered goals in opportune times this season as four of his five markers have come in Maroon and Gold wins, including the game winner against both UND and OSU. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is tied for third in the NCAA recording two game-winning goals. He continues to average nearly a point per game in his Gophers' career totaling 40 points (20 goals, 20 assists) during 41 contests thanks to a pair of multi-point efforts during the 2022-23 campaign.

FRESHMEN FILLING IT UP
With 11 freshmen on the roster, Minnesota has relied on this group to contribute in every aspect, but especially on the offensive end where the class has combined for 14 goals and 16 assists, accounting for 45 percent of the team's goal scoring. Jimmy Snuggerud's hat trick versus MSU has the newcomer pacing the squad with six goals, while Logan Cooley posted points in each of his first three games and has seven points for third on the team. Connor Kurth has found the back of the net three times; Brody Lamb has a pair of goals and John Mittelstadt tallied his first collegiate goal against the Buckeyes last weekend. Ryan Chesley, Luke Mittelstadt, Garrett Pinoniemi and Charlie Strobel all have tallied at least one assist this year.

LOCALLY SOURCED
Holding the moniker of the State of Hockey, Minnesota is known for its strong history of players that start skating on local ice sheets and backyard ponds. That has fed a deep pipeline of talent to colleges around the country, most importantly to the University of Minnesota. The Gophers' roster features a collection of 26 student-athletes, 20 of which were born and raised within the state lines. Even more impressive is the fact that 16 of the Minnesotans on the team are from within 40 miles of campus.

WHEN YOU CALL MY NAME
Fourteen of Minnesota's 26 rostered players have heard their name called in the NHL Entry Draft, six of which are part of this year's freshmen class. The Gophers have had the most all-time draft selections (227) by any NCAA men's hockey program after adding four in July 2022. At least one Gopher has been drafted in 48 of the last 49 NHL Entry Drafts dating back to 1974, with 2001 being the only exception. Only Harvard has more draft picks (15) on its NCAA roster for the 2022-23 season.

NHL HONORS
A pair of former Gophers recently reached impressive milestones in the National Hockey League as Phil Kessel played in the 990th-consecutive game of his career Oct. 25 setting the Iron Man record for most games played without missing a contest, while also scoring the 400th goal of his NHL career. The week before, Alex Goligoski stepped on the ice Oct. 20 at the Xcel Energy Center for his 1,000th career NHL game joining five former Minnesota athletes to hit the mark. The two have combined to win three Stanley Cups, all of which were with the Pittsburgh Penguins, across 33 NHL seasons.
