STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota opens Big Ten play Sunday when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., and Purdue University. The Golden Gophers and Boilermakers tussle at 4 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network. The contest also marks the first ranked opponent the Gophers will see this year as Purdue is ranked No. 5 in the recent AP poll.
• Minnesota will look to win its first Big Ten-opening game since the 2017-18 season. Minnesota defeated Rutgers that season, 89-67, at Williams Arena. This marks the sixth straight year the Big Ten has scheduled conference games early in December, which also began in the 2017-18 season. Last year, the Gophers fell to then-No. 19 Michigan State at Williams Arena, 75-67. The last time Minnesota opened Big Ten play on the road was 2021 when the Gophers fell to Illinois, 92-65 in Champaign, Ill.
• Minnesota played Purdue just once during the 2021-22 season and it marks the first time since Jan 30, 2021 to visit Mackey Arena. Minnesota dropped an 88-73 decision last year to the Boilermakers at Williams Arena on Feb. 2, 2022. The Gophers fell to Purdue on Jan. 30, 2021 in their last Mackey Arena showdown, 82-61. In the last five meetings against the Boilermakers, Minnesota is 2-3.
• The Gophers are coming off a 67-57 road loss to Virginia Tech as a part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Pharrel Payne and Ta'Lon Cooper led Minnesota with 13 points apiece and Joshua Ola-Joseph had 11 points. The Gophers are 12-12 all time during the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• As a true freshman, Pharrel Payne leads the team in rebounding, averaging 6.4 per game. In the Big Ten, he ranks 18th in rebounding, but is the only freshman (true or redshirt) listed in the top 25. Payne also averages 0.9 blocks per game, which ranks 23rd, one of four true freshmen to make this top 25.
ABOUT PURDUE
• The No. 5 Purdue Boilermakers enter the Minnesota game with a perfect 7-0 record and home for the first time since Nov. 15. Since their last home game, the Boilermakers have neutral site wins over West Virginia, Gonzaga and Duke, while they defeated Florida State Wednesday with a 10-point win over Florida State (79-69) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• Purdue is led by Zach Edey, who averages 22.1 points. That ranks first in the Big Ten and sixth nationally. Edey has posted 20-plus points in his last six games. His 11.4 rebounds per game also is a Big Ten best and ranks fifth nationally. Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith also average double-digits for Purdue at 11.3 and 10.3, respectively. Loyer has a team-best 17 three-pointers this season.
• As a team, Purdue averages 77.1 points while giving up just 60.9 to its opponents. The Boilermakers are shooting 46 percent from the field, including 33.3 from the arc.
