• The University of Minnesota is home for the second-straight game when the Golden Gophers host No. 23 Mississippi State, Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised on Big Ten Network. It marks just the second time in school history the two teams will tangle.Â
• Minnesota has only faced Mississippi State once in school history, but coming just last year in Starkville, Miss. The Gophers earned an 81-76 win over the Bulldogs on Dec. 5, 2021. All five Gopher starters held double-figure scoring in that game in Payton Willis (24 points), Jamison Battle (20), Eylijah Stephens (12), Eric Curry (12) and Luke Loewe (11). Following the game, Willis was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week for that performance.Â
• The Gophers are facing their second ranked opponent in three games as Mississippi State enters this contest ranked No. 23 in the latest AP poll. In fact, Minnesota will also face its fourth opponent currently ranked in the top 50 NET rankings, provided earlier this week by the NCAA. Purdue is currently ranked No. 3, Mississippi State at No. 5, Virginia Tech at No. 36 and UNLV at No. 43.Â
• The Gophers are coming off a 90-75 loss Michigan, Thursday at Williams Arena. Ta'Lon Cooper led five Minnesota players in double-figures by tying his season-high with 16 points, Pharrel Payne had 15 points, and Dawson Garcia added 13 points. Michigan shot 52.4 percent and made 10-of-18 three-pointers in the win. Minnesota drops to 4-5 this season, 0-2 in Big Ten play. Michigan improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league action.
• Minnesota had five players reach double-figures in the same game for the first time in just over a year (Dec. 5, 2021 at Mississippi State). Ta'Lon Cooper has now scored double-digit points in the past three games. Thursday's game was also a season-high 75 points scored for the Gophers. Previous season best was 72 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn.Â

Under first-year head coach Chris Jans, the Bulldogs have notable wins against Marquette and Utah. Mississippi State holds a No. 5 NET ranking, which came out earlier this week by the NCAA.Â
• Tolu Smith leads the team in points (130), points per game (16.3) and rebounds (10.0).  D.J. Jefferies has started in all eight games and averages 9.8 points. Cameron Matthews and Shakeel Moore each have 19 assists, while Moore has 23 steals already this season.Â
• As a team, Mississippi State holds its opponents to just 49.6 points per game, while scoring 70.1. MSU ranks second in the nation in scoring defense, only behind Houston, who averages 47.3 ppg. They also are shooting 42.6 percent from the field, including 30.1 from three and are 62.2 percent in free throw percentage. As a team, the Bulldogs also have 126 assists and 93 steals this year. MSU also averages 43.3 rebounds per game, including 16 offensive rebounds, which ranks third and second nationally, respectively.Â
