12/22/2022 3:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (6-6) with 18 points and grabbed six rebounds and Jamison Battle added 14 points and five boards, as the Gophers recorded a 58-55 win over Chicago State at Williams Arena.

Garcia finished the game 8-of-15 from the field and added two assists and two blocked shots to go with his six rebounds in 30 minutes, while Battle was 6-of-14 and made a pair of three-pointers. Joshua Ola-Joseph had seven points, Braeden Carrington finished with six points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Ta'Lon Cooper led the Gophers with nine assists and added five boards.

Minnesota opened the game just 4-of-11 from the field and trailed 10-8, but the Gophers responded by making 6-of-8 during a 15-3 run highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Carrington to take a 23-13 lead at the 7:37 mark. Battle followed with five points during a 10-5 spurt to give Minnesota its largest lead of the half at 33-18, but the Cougars battled back to cut the Gophers' lead to 38-30 at the half. Battle led the Gophers with 10 first-half points, with Garcia adding eight points and a team-high four rebounds. Carrington had six points and three boards, and Ta'Lon Cooper dished out eight assists.

The Gophers held a 44-34 lead with 16:23 remaining, but the Cougars went on a 12-0 run during a five-minute, 40-second drought for Minnesota to take a 46-44 lead with 11:07 left. Minnesota snapped the scoring drought with an 8-0 run to retake the lead, 52-46, but the Cougars pulled within 52-51 with 5:40 remaining and then recaptured a 54-53 lead at the 3:13 mark. A pair of free throws gave CSU a 55-54 edge with 2:53 on the clock, but a jumper from Battle and a tip-in dunk from Trey Thompson at the 1:14 mark put the Gophers up three, 58-55, and that wound up being the final.

Minnesota returns to action on Dec. 29 when Alcorn State visits Williams Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
