• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back in action for the first time in 12 days as the Golden Gophers face the Wisconsin Badgers, Jan. 3, in Madison, Wis. Minnesota's game against Alcorn State was canceled, which left the last Gopher competition on Dec. 22 vs. Chicago State. It marks the second-straight year Alcorn State had to cancel its game against the Gophers. Last year, Minnesota had a 13-day break heading into Big Ten play.
• Minnesota and Wisconsin battled twice last season, as the Badgers picked up two wins over the Gophers. Wisconsin, earned a 68-67 win in the two team's last contest, held at Williams Arena on Feb. 23, 2022. Minnesota was led by Jamison Battle (17 points), while Payton Willis and Eylijah Stephens each had 13 points. Minnesota fell in a 66-60 decision at Madison on Jan. 30, 2022.
• Guard Ta'Lon Cooper is 10 assists away from reaching his 500th career assist. The junior from Roebuck, S.C., established 407 during his Morehead State tenure, including 202 in 2021-22. With the Gophers, Cooper has established 83 assists this season and ranks nationally in assists per game (6.9).
• Minnesota is coming off a 58-55 win over Chicago State on Dec. 22 at Williams Arena. Dawson Garcia led Minnesota (6-6) with 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Jamison Battle added 14 points and five boards.
• Minnesota has three freshmen that average nearly 20 minutes played this season in Braeden Carrington (24.8), Pharrel Payne (21.1) and Jaden Henley (19.6). In fact, Minnesota has four freshmen who average over 17 minutes with Joshua Ola-Joseph at 17.7. No other Big Ten team has more than two freshman playing 20+ minutes per game and Minnesota is the only team that has four freshmen average over 17.
Purdue (Smith/Loyer), Ohio State (Sensabaugh/Thornton) and Illinois (Clark/Epps) all have two. In fact, within the Big Ten, only six schools have a single freshman that averages over 20 minutes played this season.
ABOUT WISCONSIN
• No. 15 Wisconsin enters the Gopher contest with a 10-2 overall record and 2-0 in league action. The Badgers are riding a five-game win streak and closed out nonconference play with a 76-66 win over Western Michigan on Dec. 30.
• A balanced attack, Wisconsin has four average double-digits this season. Tyler Wahl lead the team averaging 14.1 ppg, followed by Chucky Hepburn (11.9), Steven Crowl (11.5) and Connor Essegian (10.4). Wahl also leads the team averaging 6.8 rebounds.
• As a team, Wisconsin averages 68.92 points per game. Ranking fourth in the league in scoring defense, the Badgers allow 61.25 ppg. The Badgers are shooting 43.1 percent from the field, including 38 percent from three point range. They also are shooting 69 percent in free throws and average 33.3 rebounds.
