Freshmen Stop Streaking Buckeyes with 3-2 Win

2/11/2022 8:50:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Minnesota's freshmen scored all three goals and tallied seven of nine points.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7/8 Gopher men's hockey team rallied from an early deficit to snap a seven-game unbeaten streak by No. 8/7 Ohio State on Friday night with a 3-2 win at Value City Arena.

The top-10 matchup also saw Minnesota (18-11-0 overall, 13-6-0-1-2-0 Big Ten) hand the Buckeyes their second loss in the last 16 games and first regulation loss since Dec. 10.

For the second Friday in a row, the freshman class led the way for Minnesota as Chaz Lucius, Tristan Broz and Aaron Huglen tallied goals for the Maroon & Gold and the newcomers tallied seven of the team's nine points in the win.

After Ohio State (21-8-2, 13-6-2-1-1-1) struck first with a goal from Cole McWard at 6:41 of the first period, the Gophers bounced right back with a pair of goals at the end of the opening stanza. Lucius pocketed his ninth of the year at 17:19 for the equalizer with assists coming from Rhett Pitlick and Huglen. Before the period was out, Broz put the Gophers in front at 18:38 with his fourth of the year off feeds from Sammy Walker and Bryce Brodzinski.

Minnesota added to the lead with another all-freshmen goal at 15:14 of the second period with Huglen's fifth of the year. Pitlick and Lucius earned assists on the eventual game winner. Ohio State cut into the lead 31 seconds into the third period with a goal from Joe Dunlap, but the Buckeyes would get no closer.

Justen Close made a career-high 32 saves in net for the Gophers to improve to 6-3-0 on the year. Jakub Dobes took the loss for Ohio State with 28 saves.

Noteworthy
Minnesota improved to 5-1-1 at Value City Arena under Bob Motzko…Pitlick now has five points (one goal, four assists) in the last three games…Minnesota's three-game winning streak is tied for the program's best stretch of the season.

Coach's Comments
"It was a good game for us…just a strong, steady game for us," Motzko said. "I t we played well from start to finish. I think there is better level for us to hit, but I thought we were strong all game long."

Next Up: Ohio State Finale
The Gophers conclude this weekend's Big Ten series with the Buckeyes on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 5:00 p.m. CT (TV: Big Ten Network; Stream; FOX Sports App; Radio: KFAN+/96.7 FM).
