Gophers to take on the Memphis Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide
Following split results in their visit to Utah, the University of Minnesota tennis team continues their road trip in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Gophers will square off against the Memphis Tigers in a neutral match on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., before taking on the hosts at the same time on Sunday. Memphis carries a 7-2 record, with their most recent matchup coming against a familiar B1G 10 opponent in Nebraska. Alabama remains unbeaten on the year, as they are 7-0 overall, 6-0 in home matches.Â
Last Saturday, Minnesota set a program record for its best start to a season. They won their first ten matches of the year, culminating in a victory over Washington State and besting the 9-0 figure last achieved in 1997. On Sunday, the Gophers were unable to extend the streak, as they fell to Utah in Salt Lake City. They will look to start a new streak against the Tigers. Â
Previous Match
Minnesota is coming off a 5-2 victory against Washington State, followed by their first loss of the season, 0-4 to the Utes. On Saturday, the Gophers earned the doubles point, before closing out the Cougars with a 4-2 singles record. On Sunday, a 1-2 doubles record saw the point go to the opposition for only a second time this season. Minnesota was unable to recover, losing the first three singles matches to finish.Â
The Competition
Memphis is 7-2 on the year, and 1-0 in neutral matches. The Tigers suffered their second defeat of the season in their most recent match, squaring off against B1G 10 opponent Nebraska, falling 1-4 in Lincoln. The Gophers are 2-2 in previous matches against Memphis, all meetings coming since 2017. They last played in 2020, a 4-1 Minnesota victory at Baseline Tennis Center.
Alabama is 7-0 on the year, 6-0 at home, as they host the trio of undefeated matches on the weekend. The Gophers are 1-1 all time against the Crimson Tide, their last meeting coming in 2003. This will mark Minnesota's second time playing in Tuscaloosa.Â
