Gopher Women Finish Sixth at Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – Highlighted by a runner-up finish from sophomore Megan Van Berkom in the 200 fly, the Minnesota women's swimming and diving team finished in sixth place as competition wrapped up Saturday at the 2022 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Madison, Wis.

It's the third straight season that the Golden Gophers have finished in sixth place, and they've now finished at least that high every year since 2003, a 20-year stretch. Their point total of 838.5 was its highest since 2019.

"I'm very proud of this group of women, our coaches and our staff," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said.Ā "We took a nice step forward this weekend as a team. We come out of this meet with three likely NCAA invite times, the ability to swim all of our relays at NCAAs, and our divers in good position to enter NCAA zones. I can't wait for NCAAs next month."

Ohio State won the team title for the third straight year with 1,303 points, followed by Michigan (1185), Indiana (1100), host-Wisconsin (1085) and Northwestern (919.5). The Gophers were 359.5 points ahead of seventh-place Purdue.

Van Berkom capped off her impressive week by winning the silver in the 200 fly and breaking her own school record in the process. She was the No. 2 seed through prelims and finished there in the finals with a time of 1:53.89, becoming the first Gophers female to eclipse the 1:54 mark in the event. Van Berkom had previously set the record at the Minnesota Invite in December with a time of 1:54.15.

The Chatham, Ill., native finished her week at the Big Tens with a first-place finish in the 400 IM, runner-up finishes in the 200 IM and 200 fly, and two school records.

She was named All-Big Ten First Team along with senior Sarah Bacon, who swept the 1- and 3-meter diving competition with championship and school records to earn Big Ten Diver of the Championships honors. Fellow Gopher senior Joy Zhu was named All-Big Ten Second Team after taking second on the 3-meter, third on the 1-meter and 11th on the platform. Ā Ā

Minnesota also had podium performances from freshman Hannah Cornish and its 400 freestyle relay team.

Cornish took eighth place in the 100 free finals, while she later teamed with junior Maggie Summit, senior Olivia Bloomer and junior Jordan McGinty in the final event of the championships and took sixth place with a time of 3:15.75. That was a season-best performance, lowering the team's 'B' cut.

Up next, the Minnesota divers prepare to return to Madison for the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships, March 7-9. The program will then wait to find out who will be representing it at the NCAA Championships, March 16-19, in Atlanta.
