MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Max McHugh continued his reign in the breaststroke at the Big Ten Championships Friday in West Lafayette, Ind.

The two-time defending champion in the 100 breast, McHugh was third after Friday morning's prelims, but he left no doubt by claiming his third straight title Friday evening in a time of 50.67.

McHugh trailed by just .01 at the 25-yard mark and held the lead at 50 yards before distancing himself even further as the race went on. After leading by .13 at the halfway mark, he extended it to .42 at the final turn before touching .56 seconds ahead of the competition.

With his victory, he becomes just the third Gopher ever to win an event three years in a row. He joins Steve Jackman who did it in both the 50 and 100 free from 1961-63, as well as Todd Smolinski, who won the 100 back from 2001-03.

McHugh will look to sweep the breaststroke events Saturday when he defends his title in the 200 breast.

"So many of our first and second-year guys stood up today, in addition to the performances you'd expect from guys like Max and Jake (Butler)," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "These are important steps for our team to take, and I'm looking forward to another great day tomorrow."

Minnesota earned a pair of top-10 finishes in the 200 free.

Freshman Bar Soloveychik (1:33.80) finished in fifth place in the 'A' final, while fellow freshman Chris Morris (1:35.88) set a personal record by taking 10th overall in the 'B' final.

The Golden Gophers were also represented in the 'A' final of the 100 back as junior Desmon Sachtjen touched in eighth place in a time of 47.93.

Sophomore William Christenson (3:50.79) led the way in the 400 IM with a 14th-place finish, while fellow sophomore Kaiser Neverman (46.77) was the Gophers' top finisher in the 100 fly as he placed 18th.

In diving, junior Jake Butler earned his way in the championship final on the 3-meter and used a career-high score of 421.15 to finish in seventh place.

As a team, Minnesota remained in eighth place with 404 points, trailing Penn State for seventh by 23.

Minnesota closes out the 2022 Big Ten Championships Saturday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT with the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast and 200 fly on the schedule. Platform diving starts at 11 a.m., while the 1650 free event is set to take place at 2:15 p.m. The finals start at 4:30 with the championship heat of the 1650, followed by the aforementioned events and the addition of the 400 free relay.
