Hasz Wins 3K Title on Day 1 of Big Ten Indoor Championships

2/25/2022 8:14:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota saw another title-winning performance from Bethany Hasz at the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday night. The graduate student captured her second-straight 3000m indoor title in come-from-behind fashion, helping the Gophers finish with 18 points after the first day of the indoor conference meet in Geneva, Ohio, at the SPIRE Institute.

Hasz, who has won Big Ten titles at four different distances (3000m, 6000m and 10000m), clocked a 9:06.93 to capture the title over Michigan State's Jenna Magness who Hasz hunted down late for the victory. Finishing fourth in the same race was sister Megan Hasz, who finished in a time of 9:12.36, a personal record indoors by over five seconds.

"It is a really great feeling," Hasz said after the win. "It was the goal coming into today to repeat, knowing that I did it last year. It really was a fun race. I went into the race knowing that I wanted to be the hunter, not the hunted. My parents and my husband were all here and it is just so much fun having their support here in person and we had a ton of Gopher fans today."

"[Bethany] is so savvy at this point in her career," track and field assistant coach Sarah Hopkins said. "It was great that she could kind of sit in that top group and didn't really have the lead for most of the race. She's done this enough to know you need that last little bullet at the end and [Jenna Magness] is a phenomenal runner and I knew she was in a good position, and I really didn't know if [Bethany] was going to win at the end. Magness was trying to hold her off with all of her might, but Bethany just had that last little lean, and she's done that before and it's just great to see her do that and help the team out with those huge points along with her sister Megan who had a great race as well."

Three other Minnesota events earned points on Friday, including Lexy Berger in the women's pole vault. The redshirt sophomore posted yet another lifetime best in the event to earn a three-way tie for seventh place at 4.12m (13-6 1/4). Berger's performance ties Andrea Smith's mark in 2008 for the No. 5 best indoor vault in program history. Minnesota's DMR squad consisting of Erin Reidy, Kayla Vogt, Anastasia Korzenowski and Libby Halbmaier dropped a 11:23.87 to secure an eighth-place finish in the DMR while Devia Brown's 16.22m (53-2 3/4) also was good enough for eighth and one team point.

The Golden Gophers qualified eight individuals to Saturday's finals in five different events. Amira Young will appear in two finals after qualifying in the 60m in a time of 7.37 while her 23.68 earned her a spot in the 200m final. Odell Frye will join Young on the straightaway, qualifying in the 60m in a time of 7.41.

Jayla Campbell's 54.01 in the 400m earned her a spot in the final along with teammate Janielle Josephs at 54.14. The other two members of Minnesota's current 4x400m school record relay both made the final in the 600m with Val Larson's 1:29.02 earning her the No. 2 overall time while Abigail Schaaffe's 1:29.88 was good enough for fifth in the prelims. Finally, Abby Kohut-Jackson won her prelim heat of the mile in a time of 4:48.76 to earn a spot in Saturday's final.

Minnesota had a number of quality performances on Friday that didn't quite make the cut to Saturday's Big Ten finals. Maja Maunsbach posted a lifetime best in the 60m hurdles at 8.46, finishing 10th, to improve her No. 5 spot on the program's top 10 indoor list. Reidy's 2:08.05 was an improvement on her indoor lifetime best, but finished just one spot out of the final at ninth while Korzenowski's 2:08.06 was also a lifetime best, but finished 10th overall.
