Gophers Secure Second Straight Big Ten Indoor Title

2/26/2022 6:24:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won its second straight Big Ten Indoor Championship on Saturday at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio. The Golden Gophers scored a total of 102 points to secure the title, holding off the likes of Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.

The team win marked Minnesota's sixth indoor and ninth overall Big Ten championship in women's track & field.

In fitting fashion, the Golden Gophers 4x400m relay team also won back-to-back indoor titles in a time of 3:34.35. The team of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe officially stamped the Gophers team title for the second straight year.

In total, Minnesota got scoring contributions from 17 different times and marks with Bethany Hasz scoring a team-high 18 points. After winning the 3000m for the second straight year on Friday, Hasz finished as the meet's runner-up in the 5000m in a time of 16:22.37 while sister Megan Hasz added a bronze medal performance to make a big move late for the team.

Also a major factor in Minnesota's come-from-behind team performance on Saturday was Abby Kohut-Jackson in the mile and 5000m. Kohut-Jackson scored a combined nine points in the two events, finishing as the meet's runner-up in the mile in a school-record time of 4:35.36, besting the 13-year old record held by Heather Dorniden. Kohut-Jackson then followed that up with an eighth-place finish in the 5000m, nearly breaking into the program's top 10 indoor list.

Minnesota got a huge boost in team points from Tiera Robinson-Jones in the triple jump. The mark of 12.67m goes down as the No. 4 best indoor mark in school history and in dramatic fashion propelled Robinson-Jones from eighth to third on her final attempt in the final.

In her first appearance on the Big Ten stage, first-year Gopher Odell Frye made a big-time splash in the 60m. She dropped a lifetime best of 7.34, the third-best time in school history, to finish as the silver medalist. Defending champion Amira Young was right behind Frye with a time of 7.35, good enough for a fourth-place finish and a total of 13 points for the Maroon and Gold in the event.

Young was able to add to her medal collection just minutes later in the 200m final, finishing third overall in the event. Winning her heat, Young posted a season-time of 23.58 to earn the bronze medal. Also picking up big points in the sprints was Campbell and Josephs in the 400m final. Campbell posted a new lifetime best of 53.92 to take sixth while Josephs earned an eighth-place finish to earn another team point.

Minnesota's 4x400m relay team was not finished adding points to the board, Schaaffe and Larson picked up another 12 team points with the silver medal going to Schaaffe. Schaaffe posted a lifetime best in the event at 1:27.19, getting beat out by Michigan's Aurora Rynda's 1:26.50, the second best time in collegiate history in the event and a new Big Ten championship record.

Wrapping up the Gophers medalists on Saturday was Shelby Frank in the women's weight throw. Posting a 21.28m (69-9 3/4) on her fourth throw, Frank posted four different marks over 20-meters in her series. Defending champion Tess Keyzers posted a mark of 21.00m (68-10 3/4) on her first attempt of the day, but was unable to improve and settled for fifth place.
