Gophers Sweep Event Titles in Win at Illinois

The University of Minnesota gymnastics team took down Illinois with a final score of 197.125 to 195.725 on Sunday afternoon in Champaign, Ill. 

The Gophers won each event title on the way to the victory and improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. 

Notable
It was a day for debuts as Maddie Quarles made her collegiate debut on floor and Gianna Gerdes made her debut on both beam and floor. Freshman Marissa Jencks made her official collegiate debut for the Gophers as she led off the vault lineup. 

Junior Halle Remlinger earned her second career title on floor with a 9.925, the first coming in 2020 at Ohio State. 

Minnesota's 49.375 on beam was the highest score on the apparatus this season.

"We are just really proud of the way the team performed today," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We had some new people fill in, they stepped up and really did a great job. Coming back from having a weekend off, we were just really proud of how the team did and how we performed today."

All-Around
For the third competition in a row, Lexy Ramler won the all-around title with a 39.575. The St. Michael, Minn. native won the beam title with a near-perfect 9.975, scored a 9.875 on vault and bars and recorded a 9.850 on floor. 

Ona Loper followed in second place in the all-around with a 39.500, made from a 9.900 on vault, 9.850 on beam and a 9.875 on bars and floor. 

Event Breakdown
Bars
The Gophers started the afternoon on bars and had a team score of 49.075 on the event. Loper and Ramler shared the event title and the highest score for the Maroon and Gold, both posting a 9.875. Hannah Willmarth added a 9.825 and the duo of Mallory LeNeave and Halle Remlinger added a pair of 9.750s. 

Vault
Loper led the way for the Gophers on vault with a 9.900 and the event title. Ramler and Maddie Quarles tied for second place after posting 9.875s, and Gianna Gerdes came in fifth with a 9.850. Freshman Marissa Jencks wrapped up the lineup with a 9.800 in her Gophers debut to put the team total at 49.300.

Floor
Minnesota claimed the top three scores of the day on floor, with Halle Remlinger earning the title after a 9.925, Quarles posting a 9.900 in her career debut and Loper adding a 9.875. Ramler's 9.850 tied for fourth and Emily Koch's 9.825 finished sixth. Minnesota finished with a 49.375 on the event. 

Beam
Ramler's event title and near-perfect 9.975 led the Gophers to a season-high 49.375 on beam. Koch's solid routine gave her a 9.875 and Loper and Abbie Nylin followed closely behind, both scoring 9.850. Freshman Haley Tyson put up a career-high 9.825.
