Minnesota's NCAA Cuts Heading Into Big Tens

2/9/2022 3:01:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS - One week remains until the 2022 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, marking a good time to check where the Gophers stand ahead of the NCAA Championships.

To date, 22 Minnesota swimmers have combined to record 35 different NCAA cuts so far this season. In addition, nine divers has posted 20 scores that meet the NCAA Diving Zone qualifications.

Senior Max McHugh headlines the list of Gopher swimmers, having achieved a pair of 'A' cuts in the 100 breaststroke (50.58) and 200 breast (1:51.27), both events where he is the defending NCAA champion.

McHugh is the lone individual to record an 'A' cut so far, but the Golden Gophers saw their women's 200 freestyle relay team of senior Olivia Bloomer, freshman Hannah Cornish, and juniors Maggie Summit and Grace Bennin match the automatic qualifying mark and school record of 1:28.43.

In addition, six Gophers have secured multiple NCAA 'B' cuts this season.

Sophomore Megan Van Berkom has 'B' cuts in four different events: 500 Free (4:46.28), 200 Fly (1:54.15), 200 IM (1:56.48) and 400 IM (4:06.92). In fact, her 200 fly and 200 IM times set at the Minnesota Invite are both school records.

Along with her spot on the 200 free relay, Cornish has 'B' cuts in the 50 Free (22.41), 100 Free (48.77) and 200 Free (1:46.09).

Summit (50 Free and 100 Free) and fellow juniors Emma Lezer (100 Breast and 200 Breast) and Jordan McGinty (200 Free and 100 Fly) all have a pair of 'B' cuts.

On the men's side, freshman Bar Soloveychik has earned provisionary times in three events: 200 Free (1:35.17), 500 Free (4:15.84) and 1650 Free (15:00.23).

On top of these swimming performances, nine Gopher divers have notched scores high enough to qualify them for NCAA Diving Zones (March 7-9) in at least one event: Sarah Bacon, Jake Butler, Susanna Fish, Kate LaMonica, Matthew Mitchell, Av Osero, Megan Phillip, Ryan Phillip and Joy Zhu.

More names can be expected to be added to these lists once the Gophers compete at the Big Ten Championships. The women are set to compete Feb. 16-19 in Madison, Wis., while the men travel to West Lafayette, Ind., Feb. 23-26.

Both the men's and women's NCAA Championships will be held in Atlanta this year. The women are scheduled to compete March 16-19, with the men going the following week, March 23-26.
