Jack Kelly hit a grand slam for the Gophers
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers dropped their second straight game against Air Force on Saturday, falling 15-6 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Starting pitcher J.P. Massey struggled to find the strike zone, walking six in just 1.1 innings while allowing four earned runs. As a team, the Gophers walked 13 and hit four Air Force batters.
Jack Kelly went 1-for-3 and plated four with a grand slam in the fifth inning, his third home run of the season. Drew Stahl led the 'U' with a 2-for-4 day at the dish.
The Falcons started the scoring by tallying one run in the top of the first inning after drawing three walks and plating their first on a wild pitch by Massey.
After walking three and forcing a fly out, Massey was replaced by Tom Skoro with one out and the bases full in the second inning. An RBI single and a two-run double cleared the bases and put the visitors up 4-0.
AFA would add two more in the top of the third. Skoro hit the first two batters of the frame before inducing a pop up for the first out. Josh Culliver came in to replace him, striking out the first batter, who would reach first as strike three was a wild pitch. A two-run single by Falcons leadoff hitter Blake Covin would put the visitors up 6-0.
The Gophers tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Kelly was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch. A double down the right field line from Ronald Sweeny plated Kelly to put the home team on the board.
The Falcons would respond with an eight spot in the top of the fifth. The first five batters of the inning were either walked (4) or hit by a pitch (1), playing a pair of runs. A two-run double and a two-run single helped the visitors extend their lead to 12-1. AFA would add two more after drawing three consecutive walks against Gophers right-hander Chase Becker.
Minnesota would get four runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Kelly hit a grand slam to center field. AFA would add one more run in the top of the eighth while the Gophers would plate one in the bottom of the ninth for a 15-6 final score.
