Gophers Fall at Maryland

3/2/2022 11:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jamison Battle led all scorers with a career-high 39 points, as the Minnesota Gophers fell to the Maryland Terrapins 84-73 in Wednesday night's match-up at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Md. The Terrapins were led in the scoring column by Hakim Hart, who finished with 19 on the night. Payton Willis added 21 points for Minnesota as well, coupling with Battle for 60 of the Gophers' 73 points.

The Gophers (13-15, 4-15 Big Ten) kept the game close over the first six minutes of the second half, after ending the first only four points behind Maryland, before the Terrapins eventually went on a 10-0 run to pull ahead of Minnesota by 13 for their largest lead of the game. A combination of Battle, Willis and Sean Sutherlin saw the Gophers rally back late, however, pulling the game within two after Battle hit a three from the top of the key with only 2:34 remaining. The Terps then followed with an 8-0 run of their own, ultimately topping the Gophers in the contest.

Although his team fell, the night was a historic one for sophomore forward Jamison Battle, who set career-highs in points (39), FG made (14) and 3FG made (7). In all, the Robbinsdale, Minn. product made 14-31 field goals, including 7-16 from three-point range. From a layup at the 1:38 mark of the first half to his sixth made three-pointer of the day at the 10:14 mark of the second, Battle rattled off all of the Gopher's 18 points. His performance tied Maryland's Diamond Stone for the Xfinity Center's individual scoring record, as well as Maryland's Nik Caner-Medley for the facility's FGM record. The 39 points also puts Battle at tied-sixth on the single-game all-time records list for the Gophers. The performance was the highest scoring for any Gopher since Marcus Carr tallied 41 at Nebraska on Feb. 27, 2021.

Eylijah Stephens and Sean Sutherlin led the Gophers on the boards with eight a piece. Five Terrapins reached double digits scoring in the contest, in Hart (19), Fatts Russell (16), Eric Ayala (15), Julian Reece (12) and Qudus Wahab (10). Ayala led on the boards with nine.
