MINNEAPOLIS – The 2022 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close Saturday night with Minnesota senior Max McHugh once again taking his rightful place on the podium.

One night after winning a second straight national title in the 100 breast, McHugh posted his third consecutive top-two finish in the 200 breast as he claimed national runner-up honors at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga.

McHugh, who finished second in 2019 and was the event winner a year ago, broke his own conference and school record and became the first Gophers swimmer to go under 1:49 in the event as he recorded a time of 1:48.76, .26 seconds better than his previous best set last year at the NCAAs. It also makes McHugh the fourth fastest performer in the event in NCAA history.

In an incredibly competitive final that featured five of the fast swimmers in the event in history, McHugh led throughout the first 150 yards, but he was ultimately out-touched by Arizona State freshman Leon Marchard, who won with a time of 1:48.20.

"I'm proud of this group of men," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "They represented Minnesota very well, put us back in the top 20 and they all return next year. We have a lot of men on our roster and incoming next fall that are capable of competing at this meet. We should be a fun team to watch next year in our home pool at NCAAs."

The other competitor for Minnesota on Saturday was sophomore Chris Nagy, who finished 20th in the 1650 free. His time of 14:56.93 was the second fastest of his career.

As a team, Minnesota finished tied for 19th place with 44 points. It was the team's best finish since also placing 19th in 2019 with 84 points. The Golden Gophers have finished in the top 20 in three of the past four NCAA championships.

McHugh was responsible for 37 of the points with his first and second-place finishes, while freshman Bar Soloveychik earned four points for his 13th-place finish in the 500 free and junior diver Jake Butler claimed three points for finishing the 3-meter diving in 14th.
