MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Joy Zhu claimed one more spot at next week's NCAA Championships as the Zone D Diving Championships concluded Wednesday in Madison, Wis.
Having secured spots already on the 1- and 3-meter boards, Zhu needed to finish 12th or better on the platform Wednesday. She met that mark by placing 11th and ensuring herself a chance to compete in all three diving events at the NCAAs.
Zhu was 10th through prelims after scoring a 253.25, highlighted by three dives of 50 or higher. She then followed with 249.95 in the finals to secure her spot. Zhu averaged 49.99 on her five dives, including a score of 55.90 in the second round of the finals that was her best of the day.
Also in action Tuesday were sophomores Av Osero and Susanna Fish. Osero finished 20th in the prelims with a total of 205.25, missing out on a spot in the finals by two places and 7.05 points. Fish placed 27th in the prelims with a score of 180.10.
Freshman Kate LaMonica and junior Jake Butler were also scheduled to take part on the platform but did not compete.
Attention now turns to the 2022 NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga. The women compete March 16-19, while the men are set for March 23-26. Both championships will take place at McAuley Aquatic Center with Georgia Tech serving as host.
